Why are older people against Bush's dismantling of social security?
I read that several groups affiliated with retired and soon to retire Americans like the AARP are going to wage a publicity campaign against Bush's social security reforms.

Yet if I recall correctly, Bush won a majority of the 65 + vote in the election. So why in hell are they complaining now?? They voted for him, so they are getting what they deserve.

1. I'm not sure what a retired
would have against Bush's plans. They won't have any effect on them.

12. This disabled "not too old person"
Doesn't believe the shithead in the WH no matter what claims he makes. He wants to end SS as we know it for everybody. SS benefits more people than just retirees. I'd like to know what his claims are in regard to dependent children and the disabled.

2. older people tend to be the wealthiest and most well off financially
younger people voted for Kerry by over 60 percent. younger people are the ones who struggle the most to get by. either with paying for college or just finding a good job and health care to get by.

the older people who voted for Kerry are probably the ones who are taking part in opposing Bush.

it's kind of like the young republicans. while most young voters did vote for Kerry, there are still a lot of assholes who voted for Bush.

3. Well, we tried to tell them.
I'm sure it will be up to us to pick up the pieces at some point in the future (and pay for it).

4. His policy would include cutting benefits to current recipients
to help pay for the trillion dollar transitional period.

because I do not believe in investing SS funds in the stock market. I do not believe in investing in the stock market because I have lost considerable monies in the stock market. Social Security should be looked at as an insurance policy, not a retirement fund.

OTOH I will not be around a whole lot longer. The future does belong to the young people. I say to the young people do whatever you believe will work for you. Just keep in mind that at a later date when you are old and helpless and nobody wants to be around you, you will learn that a little bit of sure money is a whole lot better than no money.

7. ...in an election with 59.6% total voter turnout that means 40.4%
didn't even bother to vote. They figured 'eh, tweedle dee, tweedle dumb'. Well folks, we're stuck with 'tweedle dumb' for four more years because around 30% of the people (whose votes got counted) wanted Bush.

Hopefully with the Ohio votefraud/intimidation investigations going on right now this charade election will be overturned. Of that 59.6% that voted, Bush supposedly got 50.74% and Kerry supposedly got 48.26%--meaning of the total electorate, those who voted and those who could have but didn't, Bush got about 30.04% and Kerry got 28.76%...

I think the turnout figures are way, way, way too low. In my county we had about 70% voter turnout. I'd be willing to bet the rest of the country was the same.

9. Anyone collecting Social Security who considers themselves Republicans..
are hypocrites.

They are part of the same republican party that has vowed to destroy Social Security and all aspects of the "New Deal" Even though it has shown it works. Liberal conceived programs to help the people.

The programs are hated by republicans who say they are for smaller government, which is bullshit. Smaller government when it comes to helping people...but NOT when it grows and helps corporations with subsidies, tax cuts and give-aways with our tax dollars.

Which we have seen over and over, with the big spending, deficit increasing republicans, like Reagan, crime boss pappy Bush and now Fredo.

10. Boy, nearly all the older folks I know
are Democrats - at least the women are. Hell, our legislative district would fall completely apart without the older ladies - they do all the work!

11. Where's the best source for election results?
Broken down by area, demographics, etc.

I'm "older"--have been tossing my AARP applications for some time now, retirement is pretty distant...

13. Where and how did the media cover all this so they would know?
Our local paper didn't. Our national TV didn't. Our local TV didn't.

None of them really set out clearly was his plan was. Look how AARP turned on seniors to get the Medicare bill passed.
