Air America funded by the CIA!

Just joking, BUT...

Q An article about liberal-leaning Air America Radio aroused my curiosity about the origin of the name. Air America was a CIA-operated air charter service that hauled cargo, weapons, spies and such around the world from just after World War II through Vietnam. The article said Jon Sinton, Air America Radio's president, was driven in his mother's liberal direction because of Watergate and Vietnam. Did Sinton choose the Air America name on purpose as a kind of inside joke?

This is the explanation provided by Sinton: "Actually it is an inside joke, and in the early days of the network, we would tell people that we chose the name because we were funded by the CIA."

1. My husband was recruited by Air America back around '70

His mother had high security clearance, and so the government already knew about him. He was an aircraft mechanic, and they offered him a job. He was thinking about taking the job until they told him he'd have to have small arms training. Later, when he found out about the drug running, and he was glad he didn't get involved.
