Just finished John Le Carré's book, Absolute Friends. About 2/3 is backstory, but when he hits the (fictional ) present it gets real interesting. Here's a hint:
"This is a war of lies.... Our politicians lie to the press, they see their lies printed and call them public opinion...."
By repetition, each lie becomes an irreversible fact upon which other lies are constructed. Then we have a war...."
The process is incremental. As more lies become necessary, more wars are needed to justify them...."
The easiest and cheapest trick for any leader is to take his country to war on false pretenses...."
The is the most succinct an accurate description that I have read about our lier in resident and his pals.

Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Rove started doing that 30 years ago by trying to perpetuate a non-existent cold war and "inventing: weapons the Soviet Union had. I remember reading somewhere that when the CIA told them there was no evidence of Soviets possessing the imaginary weapons the had made up they told the CIA something to the effect that because there was no evidence, that made it even more likely that the imaginary weapons existed.
