I can hear the backlash: "Why is JEB Bush going to Asia and not JUNIOR?"
...and I guess the answer is that Junior can do whatever he wants, and what he wants to do is send Colin Powell and Jebby while he plans for his $40 million coronation.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6769602/

A spokesman for President Bush said Thursday that the president's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, will travel with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to Asia's tsunami-stricken areas, beginning over the weekend.

The move was the latest by the White House to show its commitment to help with relief efforts following initial criticism that the United States was being stingy in the face of an unprecedented disaster.

Earlier Thursday, lawmakers said they were preparing a tsunami aid package to be introduced in Congress early next year.

An amount of money has not yet been agreed upon, but it would be in addition to the $35 million pledged by President Bush on Wednesday, congressional aides said.

4. * is smart not to go. These countries do not need to divert their efforts
from disaster relief to preparing for a visit from ANY head of state. The security requirements and preparations would take too much. He has made the right decision regardless of how much this forum wants to make an issue of it.

10. From the head of state view, it makes perfect sense.
From the George W. Bush view, it's because he doesn't give a rat's ass. He's more upset over an interrupted vacation than he is the loss of life. That's why he can continue to bang the "freedom" drum while hundreds of INNOCENT Iraqis...NOT INSURGENTS, INNOCENT people...lay dead and decomposing on Iraqi soil.

This man has tunnel vision. He wouldn't know compassion if it bit him on the ASS. Sorry to disagree with you here.

How many "security requirements and preparations" would it have taken for the Boy King to interrupt his vacation and show compassion and commitment when it was apparent that the world was knee-deep in a natural disaster?

Bush's "handlers" shoved him in front of the cameras after the world expressed OUTRAGE that this little prick continued his VACATION while thousands (now hundreds of thousands) of lives were being lost.

I respect your opinion, as I respect the opinion of other posters on DU. I do not believe that in any point in time during this crisis we can say with assurance that "he has made the right decision."

I also respect your desire to defend his actions, but "this forum" is probably the last place on earth where you'll find a simpatico crowd.

12. heh, riiiiiight. Bush smart? no, what 's really happening is an old family
reprehensible PR trick.....Pappy Bush did when Jessica was in the well. He was there at the rescue and managed to turn the event into a forum to get notoriety for his eventual run at the presidency.
Jeb just following footsteps, is all.

Because, logically, think about it..is there ANY diplomatic reason for the governor of Florida to visit Indonesia? Do presidents send governors to foreign countries as an act of diplomacy? Has that EVER happened before?

no. Usually, the veep goes in his stead, or failing that, some other ranking CABINET member.

and "This forum" can make an issue of anything it wishes....perhaps you have made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up at the wrong forum?

:wtf:

Lerkfish...you've got it right.

There is no logical or diplomatic reason for any US Governor to be making that trip...none...nada...zip...zilch. The only connection you can make, and it's a huge stretch at that, is that he 'has experience dealing with natural disasters'. Pah! Having to deal with four hurricanes in one season makes him an expert in global disaster relief? I don't think so.

And the people of Florida ought to be making a huge stink out of his absence from their state, too. Near as I can tell, there's still enough going on in their recoveries for him to be dealing with. And there must be some political chicanery that's overdue down there to which he should be attending.

It's plainly political: Jeb's being positioned for the national/world stage.:grr: Ugh. :puke:

On edit: There's no reason for * to go over there, either.

Why else would a **state governor** visit a world disaster area of this immense magnitude?

In fact they're now just encasing all of Orlando including Disney World in a big Walmart.

Sri Lanka is actually about the size of the Southcenter Mall here in Seattle.

18. jeb is also privatizing lots of state career service jobs and most
recently he has plans to privatize the Department of Children and Families after his much looked for and personally chosen right wing Jesus Freak Jerry Reggier left in disgrace. Jeb is a tsunami himself and the people in the tsunami area would do well to run back into the hills whenever Jeb approaches them... they would do better to deny him entry into the country. ... he is there probably to shore up the effort to,

"have a U.S. led 'coalition' take the leadership of the relief effort away from the United Nations" as snipped from a recent e-mail from the VoteNoWar.Org people.

these bushes have no respect for pain, no respect for people, no respect for tragedies, it is all about self serving themselves--just like the step-sisters in the Cinderella story.

21. Where's Dick?
Isn't this the kind of thing Vice-President's are good for?

Hardy har har.

Maybe if we didn't have a reptilian greedmonger as our Veep...imagine Edwards issuing sympathy and meaning it. From Dick it would seem like lizard tears.

Oh and the unspoken-our so called President is detested and reviled the world over. He has no standing in the humanitarian community. I guess the press just noticed huh? I hear he's great at barbeques though.

22. Obviously, Jeb is running for President in 2008
He's travelling on behalf of his brother, the President, and with the former Secretary of State. Some have suggested Powell might be a potential candidate for President himself, and position Jeb as the President's agent on this trip sets up a psychology of Jeb being 'more in charge' than Powell.

They are single-minded and blue-blooded. Will they be in power until they have two heads each? American citizens are forced to wait and see.

24. I was going to post something similar. Jeb's along for the ride to
keep Powell on a short leash. With the Bu$hits any/all relief money is actually an "investment". Hey, Jebthro said he was getting out of politics to work in the real estate market......and I'll bet he's got a large chunk of a continent he wants to sell back to its' inhabitants.

I really loathe this family and resent them as representatives of our country.
