Lindsey Graham announces intent to question Gonzalez on Torture
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 07:47 PM by imenja
He is on Hardball expressing his concerns about Alberto Gonzalez' role in the torture memos that led to Abu Ghraib. The guy is a Christian conservative, but he's right on torture. He asked tough questions during the Abu Ghraib hearings.
He has not said whether or not he'll vote to confirm.

edit: just said he will vote for him. That is unfortunate. The questioning, hopefully, will be tough.

2. He said he would vote to confirm.
He just plans to tell him he must refute torture first. GOP values.

6. Lindsey will do what junior wants him to do and that is to ask
questions to ease public opinion and then vote for Alberto Gonzalez.

A real dog 'N pony show here folks.

7. Linsay Graham is full of hot air and deflated indignation. In the end he
will vote for the confirmation of Alberto Gonzalez.

8. I remember L. Graham's reaction at some hearing I saw on
CSPAN some time ago. I was impressed, frankly. He was visibly angry.

But now I know that despite how concerned he was, he'll still toe the right-wing line when he's told to. If he's going to vote for the guy anyway, what difference will the questioning make?

9. yes, you're right. Unfortunately Democrats announced the same
When I posted this, I hadn't heard him say he would vote for Gonzalez. Apparently Biden has decided the same. What if Gonzales said, "yes I determined the torture policy" (which of course he won't. Would they still vote for him? It sends a bad message to the rest of the world.
And what about Kerick? Gonzalez was in charge of the Kerick vetting. If that doesn't display sheer incompetence, what does?

Count on it. Graham is about as big a sleazeball as you'll find in DC. DeMint might be new but he'll soon catch up.

15. So what? Who cares?
I'm tired of rhetorical strum und drang that looks good on the teevee and ends up with its author voting for the same crooked thugs as everybody else.

Sen. Graham can just have a big hot mug of STFU and save us all time and oxygen. If he gave a hot Goddamn about Abu Ghraib or torture or allowing Bush to bum's-rush us to war, he could vote accordingly.

Words don't work any more. I don't give a damn about what anyone says. I might be inclined to give a damn about what someone does.

Graham said he would confirm, and essentially stated that, what difference does it make that the new AG was complicit in torture, as long as he fixes it in the future. In a sane world, Gonzalez would be dropped like a rock from the nomination process, and face charges.

26. "He was more forceful on the issue than most ..." Maybe, but I'll always
remember him most for how forceful he was on the subject of Clenis. He's good at trying to appear reasonable & measured, then he goes off at a complete off the wall, wackjob, forceful, GOP approved tangent guaranteed to bring him all the blessings of his party. He will not only go for Gonzalez, he'll smear anyone who fights the nomination.

32. I believe he was a JAG, and was deeply concerned about the effect of Abu
Graib on treatment of our own people--as well he should be.

He understands how this can affect our own people.

That's the word, folks.

Some people are saying that Senator Graham and Congressman David Drier together with Fox News' Shepard Smith all watched the Abu Graib videos together at Drier's apartment.

because he's already decided to confirm?

Well, at least Graham is honest that he's a mindless rubber stamp for Bush. :eyes:

29. I know it's been said many times before, but "Hardball" Matthews....
is just so much fluff when it comes to questioning anyone high on the political food chain. Graham sits there essentially saying that Gonzalez's actions had a horrible effect on our image and standing in the world, endangers our military, but should be overwhelmingly confirmed. You would hope the host with the hubris to call his show "Hardball" would ask the obvious follow up question: "Why the fuck would you vote for a guy who condones torture that led, and leads, to our loss of moral standing in the world, and endangers our military and private citizens the world over?" "Does any of your posturing on this, or the war, amount to hill of dog shit without real deeds?"

31. Why bother to ask questions
is he doesn't care about the answers? If he has already decided to vote for him, then he is insulting the American public by pretending to be concerned enough to ask tough questions.
