say what??? (my local paper)
Students Should Stand For the Pledge

Editor, Times-Dispatch: The Spotsylvania School Board was wrong to change the rule so that children do not have to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

I'm happy people are not afraid to stand up for things, but saying and complaining that standing up for the Pledge is a violation of our rights is crossing the line of what is right and what is wrong. Also, I don't think the
School Board should have changed the rules because of one 7th-grade student from Ni River Middle School. Well, I am also a 7th-grader at Ni River, and I am not the only person against this decision. Many of my classmates would back me up.

I do not see how standing up for the Pledge is a violation of our rights. I am not saying that one has to say the Pledge if one doesn't believe in it, but at least stand for it to show patriotism and support for our country. Amanda Haislip. spotsylvania.

1. funny
Funny how grown adults fall victim to the same lapses in critical thinking that this seventh grader exhibits. Well, at least she still has time to learn.

5. well, she's trying to make a point
I'm glad she's getting involved at such an earlier age...and she's been taught to love her country, no matter what.

i began to question at the end of high school/early college...so, she's got time to come to her own conclusions....she's not wrong for asking what she asks.

However, I'm not going to condemn those that face away or sit down...in my book, they have perfect reason to do. It really comes down to a personal decision: do you want to stir up controversy and deal with the public consequences or do you just want to have your own personal protest, and move with life.

Protests against the American Seig Heil shouldn't take up your entire life. A simple turning against the flag, or looking down is enough.

2. well...
my father used to tell me the same thing...at least stand to show respect to your fellows who believe in the country.

If I can avoid it, I don't stand...I don't do the American Seig Heil that is the American pledge...however, in public settings, I stand, hold my hands in front of me, and look down. I refuse to face the flag or give it any respect.

Respect is earned...when the United States acts like a civilized nation in the world, I will give it respect. Until then, I will give it the most basic minimum respect...which is to stand up, hold my hands down, and face down.

3. Amanda has the phrasing and grammar of an adult.
I guess it's because our educational system is really improving.

God Bless America.

I wont stand for the pledge of allegiance because I want be a hypocrite. That pledge is no longer(if it ever was)what this country stands for and I want stand there and pretend like everyone else around me cares about what their reciting.

When the inhabitants of this planet realize that its more important to feed a child in somalia rather then kill eachother over invisble lines drawn onto pieces of paper we'll be alot better off.

6. I consider the pledge of allegiance as idolatry.
I will no longer stand or say the pledge of allegiance. I love the land and many of the good people of this country but I don't love the government and an inanimate flag.
