Senator Lugar-- what's he like? |
|
He seems affable enough-- is he really? I know nothing about him...

14. i met him in the early 80's |
|
and he seemed decent and intelligent back then and seems to have remained so. However he does 'go along with the agenda', which at this point is clearly a contradiction to "decent and intelligent". Then again only two democrats on the senate foreign relations committee didn't 'go along with the agenda'.

4. all I know is that he is regularly called "respected by members |
|
of both parties." He is a conservative old style Indiana Republican. I don't view him necessarily as the evangelic conservatives who control the party.

9. Honestly, I thought he was a Dem because he seemed so |
|
kindly and reasonable. I don't mind the "Old Guard" republicans so much-- only, I'm afraid there aren't many left. (That's what my representative told me, anyway.)

5. he is a good guy, nothing like the right wing pukes |
|
like Tom Delay,Bill Frist etc.
Lugar is a conservative but the type that most of us would still feel comfortable with as President, especially in the area of foreign policy.

Tries to work with Dems...gave each questioner as much time as he or she wanted.
He wasn't a cheerleader for the war...he's not a neocon.
Conservative, but of the old school.

11. I was very impressed by his handling of Rice hearing |
|
I thought he was very fair, and he also asked Condi good questions and followed up with her on questions Democrats raised. I actually sent him an e-mail thanking him.
I read somewhere that moderate Repubs thought he should get the SOS job. Too bad Bush is such a moran -- I'd feel much, much better with Lugar in the job.

15. A little history: When Ferdinand Marcos tried to steal his last |
|
election, The Gipper's first reaction was to tell the voters in the Phillipines to stop whining.
Lugar was a major factor in forcing the Reagan administration to finally withdraw its support for the dictator (an old friend of the Reagans) and negotiate Marcos's departure.
He is a righteous Republican.
