Pro-Choice Congresswomen endorse Roemer for DNC Chairmanship
Two Democratic congresswomen who support abortion rights have penned a letter to members of the Democratic National Committee endorsing an abortion rights opponent, former Indiana congressman Tim Roemer, to be the next Democratic party chairman.

In the letter dated Wednesday, California Reps. Anna Eshoo and Ellen Tauscher called Roemer "the candidate we trust" for the DNC chairmanship and warned activists not to discount him because of his views on abortion.

"As chair of the DNC, he will not set policy nor will he propose altering the Democratic Party platform on this issue," Eshoo and Tauscher wrote. "We know Tim as a Catholic who has deep personal convictions on the issue of abortion."

Eshoo and Tauscher said they were endorsing Roemer because of his policies on national security and his interest in strengthening the state parties. And, they wrote, his election would demonstrate that the Democratic Party is truly committed to a diversity of views on critical issues.

Even if he/she votes Democrat on EVERY other issue. And you wonder why we loose elections. Our Base is as radical as the far right. I am 100% Pro Choice buy the way, but would like to win an election or two once in a while.

2. The question is, has Roemer been active in overturning Roe v Wade
I have no problem with anti-choice dems as long as they are record of not wanting to overturn Roe v Wade. If he has given speeches to anti-choice groups then he is a problem, but if he believes in fetal life as a personal choice, so be it.

5. As a woman, I do find it deeply troubling
How would an African-American feel if they were told to dismiss it if the spokesman didn't personally support civil rights but wasn't going to let it influence the big picture? It would be intolerable, so why do women's issues get brushed aside as if they didn't account for anything? Notice the whispering about weakening Roe vs Wade to appeal to those who oppose it? Imagine opposing civil rights to pander to racist whites.

20. The answer to your question is yes he wants to overturn Roe
Roemer voted in favor of any anti-choice legislation that came his way, including a ban on embryonic stem cell research.

Voted YES on banning human cloning, including medical research. (Jul 2001)
Voted YES on banning Family Planning funding in US aid abroad. (May 2001)
Voted YES on federal crime to harm fetus while committing other crimes. (Apr 2001)
Voted YES on banning partial-birth abortions. (Apr 2000)
Voted YES on barring transporting minors to get an abortion. (Jun 1999)

7. Why Roemer shouldn't be chair of DNC
I guess these representatives don't know his
whole story...

from http://www.mydd.com/story/2004/12/22/134013/66
and originally from Josh Marshall...

I want you to meet some friends of ours. We call them the Fainthearted-Faction. They are the thirteen Democrats who look most likely to go wobbly when President Bush comes a'courting, asking for votes to phase out Social Security. But first: a bit of history.
I was recently reminded that back in 2001 there was something called the Filner Amendment. Without getting too bogged down in the details, this was a proxy vote on social Security `privatization.' Specifically, it aimed to "prohibit funds for the purpose of implementing the final report" of the President's Social Security Commission (i.e., privatization).

It turned out pretty much as a party line vote. But not entirely. Twenty Democrats voted against it.

The good news, -- if, of, shall we say, a rather painful sort and the kind that one can only survive so much of - is that six of those representatives aren't in the 109th Congress... I might add that one of those Dmeocrats o longer in Congress is Tim Roemer, member of the 9/11 commission, and now an aspirant to head the DNC.

The upcoming battle to save Social Security from destruction by lying, rampaging conservatives is the single biggest domestic issue we have faced in the country in a decade. During this fight, we do not need the chair of the DNC to be in favor of said destruction. Unless Roemer publicly, loudly and completely repudiates his recent position on Social Security, he is utterly unacceptable as DNC chair. Mark my words: if Roemer becomes chair without doing this, I will actively encourage all progressive activists to donate and volunteer to third-party groups instead of and at the expense of the DNC. The Fainthearted Faction has no place in the Democratic leadership. This must be made clear to all involved (PDF).

22. The simple fact that Roemer is the pres of the CNP should be enough

Timothy J. Roemer
Commissioner

Tim Roemer is president of the Center for National Policy (CNP) and a distinguished scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, a non-profit research and educational institution dedicated to improving public policy outcomes. Prior to joining CNP, Roemer was a partner at Johnston and Associates. From 1991-2003, Roemer represented the Third District of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Science. Before running for Congress, he served on the staffs of John Brademas of Indiana (1978-1979) and Senator Dennis DeConcini of Arizona (1985-1989). He holds a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego, Calif., and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Notre Dame University. While he was in Congress Roemer was recognized for his successful leadership on bipartisan legislation to balance the budget, reform welfare, improve the affordability of higher education, and reform elementary and secondary education for school children. He was appointed to the Intelligence Committee's Task Force on Homeland Security and Terrorism and served on the bipartisan Joint Inquiry which issued a report on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He was the key author of the legislation in the House of Representatives to establish the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.

Just because he doesn't set policy is no reason to ignore the symbolism of electing him DNC chair. His anti-choice status is why he was encouraged to run in the first place. I am sure they are doing what Pelosi has asked of them.

10. I guess these women don't know this either...
from:
http://www.mydd.com/story/2005/1/7/122832/2050

Dave Johnson uncovers something extremely disturbing about Tim Roemer:
The Mercatus Center, for example, at George Mason University describes itself as promoting the
"use of market-based tools and analysis to discover workable solutions to pressing economic problems."

And just look at who is funding them, as well as the amounts! (Click here, and see the reports linked at the end of this post, for some background on who these funders are and what they stand for. Carthage Foundation is a Richard Mellon Scaife (more here) foundation, for example.)

As I wrote above, before this update, Tim Roemer is "a distinguished scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University." Roemer's bio at Mercatus also states:

"Roemer is a key spokesperson for the Mercatus Center's Capitol Hill Campus outreach and education program, which seeks to improve public policy outcomes by teaching economics and policy analysis to congressional staff."

Scaife is known in conservative circles as one of the "Four Sisters." Along with a handful of other uber-rich donors, his funding serves as the backbone to the "think tank" branch of the Republican Noise Machine. He has personally donated over $340 million to conservative causes. Adjusted for inflation, that total rises to over $620 million. And Tim Roemer is one of the people he is funding.
It gets worse:

Dear Fellow Democrats,
I would like to encourage you to join me in Philadelphia on February 4th and 5th, 2005 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel for the 2005 Chief of Staff Retreat. This Retreat is probably the best opportunity of the year for gathering with other senior-level congressional staff both from our party but also with our colleagues across the aisle.

The Retreat is hosted by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. I have been affiliated with this organization for the past two years in an effort to promote sound economic thinking that leads to a more prosperous and fiscally responsible America. The Mercatus Center is a non-profit and non-partisan group that seeks to educate congressional staff about markets, global prosperity for the poor and economics as they relate to the issues you are working on in your congressional or committee office.

This year's program is highly relevant to the issues facing the 109th Congress. We will discuss topics ranging from drug reimportation to Social Security, tax and pension reform, to understanding learning disparities between black and white children. I will be there to discuss national security and intelligence reforms. While we have made important progress in modernizing our intelligence system, there are several important issues confronting congress.

At a time of partisan divide, this is an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas. Any time that you can get away from the Hill to view issues from different angles, you should do it. I look forward to seeing you there.

If you are interested in learning more, or registering, please click here:

http://www.mercatus.org/capitolhillcampus/article.php/933.htm

Best regards,

Tim Roemer

That's right--Roemer is actively encouraging Democratic congressional chiefs of staff to drop their partisan attitudes and come to a swanky retreat in Philadelphia hosted by a foundation supported by the ultimate right-wing donor to learn about, among other things, market-based solutions to Social Security. 14. I think this is an awesome idea! I am for it 100%
Come on people, do you really think Roemer's views on Abortion are going to change the Democratic Platform? Absolutely NOT! He probably would never even talk about his views on abortion yet the media would and it would be great for the image of the Democratic party in the eyes of the many, many, many Democrats and swing voters who are pro-life and have not voted Democrat in years simply because of 1 issue.

This is the problem with the Democratic party in my view. Stupid decisions when it comes to winning elections. If you all want to keep loosing then fine but I personally am sick of loosing and don't have a problem with the Democratic Party having a big tent. Right now the Democratic Party has an image problem. People think we have a litmus test for being pro-choice and it's killing us in elections.

All this could do is help us be perceived as not so radical and anti religious yet it would not help the Pro Live movement one bit because Roemer would respect the party platform.

Lets think with our brains and not with our fears for once.

Congressional Democrats are going to back someone they see as safe and comfortable. That's why people like us will have to see to it that Dean becomes DNC chair.

Roemer, while still a Congressman, voted in favor of Bush's tax cuts and his proposal to repeal the Estate Tax.

Reproductive choice is far from the only reason that we should NOT want this guy to become DNC chair. If he gets it, I'm gone, because it will be clear that the party is then a lost cause.

29. RE: Roemer
What this country doesn't need is another Catholic whose anti-abortion views will play into the Republican agenda.

There was enough money and political clout in the Roman Catholic Church to make sure that George Bush was reelected. We don't need a DNC chairman who'll be the pawn of the of conservative American bishops nor the Vatican.
