"Every Hispanic-American in the country is watching," said Hatch
"Every Hispanic-American in the country is watching," said Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which voted, 10 to 8, along party lines last week to endorse Mr. Gonzales's nomination.

Mr. Gonzales's rise from childhood poverty in Texas to Harvard Law School and the highest levels of government shows, Mr. Hatch said, that "in America there is no limit to how far they can go."

Is that why Hatch thinks Gonzales should be made AG? Because he's Hispanic? I thought Republicans were against affirmative action. :eyes:

Gee, thanks for the condescension, Orrin. Bet some of your best friends are Hispanic, right?

Last week it was nominate a black and we have the black, this week the Hispanics.

3. Get with the program. We're "racists"
because we don't allow Republicans to have set-asides for less qualified minorities.

That's been the riff in Freeperville anyway. And it makes perfect sense if you're the type of racist who believes that affirmative action equals "giving" scholastic and professional opportunities to less-qualified people of color that should've gone to Real (white) 'Merkins.

Has the added benefit of making said Freepers feel momentarily virtuous.

5. Well, hell, Hatch. . . I'm Irish. . .
Let's put Kerry -- a true Irishman -- in the White House, instead of the recently-outed Irish traitor's ancestor we have there now.

Remember: Every Irishman in the world is watching!

(What a flippin' moron.)

18. I don't think Kerry is Irish, but agree with your point
IIRC, one of his ancestors changed the family name to Kerry (I think he saw County Kerry on a map of Ireland) from Kohn when they immigrated here.

Of course, the rest of your point still stands. I'd hope that we as a nation have gotten past the 'you oppose Mr(Ms.) X, therefore you are racist' mentality. Like Dr. King said, we need to look at the content of one's character, not just the color of their skin.

8. I loved how he kept quoting Henry Cisneros to give perspective
It was more of a "See? HE gets this guy, and you should too!"

I don't care if the guy is purple, it's what he stands for. I've heard more than one accusation that dems are being racist by opposing Condi and Gonzales. No, we don't like being lied to.

10. How absolutely insulting.
I harken back to MLK's remark that men ought to be judged "on the content of their character." Under that standard, Gonzales is a miserable failure.

11. Hatch admits it's all about race!
Why then would it be important to him if the most qualified candidate is being grilled for flawed character only to note he is Hispanic!? Which shines more Mr. Hatch, Gonzales's qualifications or his race? Then why bring it up if you base your party on merit rather than race?

Sometimes when you set a trap you get caught in it yourself.

12. Thats about as racist as it gets.
Hes a HISPANIC so you MUST support him.

He is BLACK so you MUST support him.

She is a BLACK WOMAN so you MUST support her.

or YOU are a bigot/racist is the unspoken part.

Sorry Hatch, they are unqualified and dangerous and that is why we dont want them. WE dont care if they are purple hermaphrodites but you do, the only reason they were picked for the positions is because their race and sex could be used as leverage to get them approved and deflect criticism.

THESE REPUBLICANS CYNICS ARE RACISTS. and gonzales, powell and rice are being used not because they are qualified but because they are willing participants in their own exploitation.

Remember the "House Negro" that Malcolm X spoke of?

13. Maybe we should give every hispanic convict amnesty
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 02:52 PM by Gonnabuymeagun
and make all the undocumented hispanic workers legal immigrants and normalize relations with Cuba as long as we are going to hero worship people for no better reason than that they are hispanic.
Does this mean that every election in a majority hispanic country should end in a tie because no hispanic deserves to lose?

On edit: See if you can get hispanics to agree with that logic Orrin, you friggin' friggin' frigger.

19. OH how they twist reality!!
The repugs are up to there usual misleading and lying of the facts. The only reason that Gonzales is being opposed is because of how evil he is. But just like the twisting of Condi Lices appointment being blocked was changed to a racial purpose they are playing the same deck of cards. It is pretty scary when even the leaders of our house and senate stand behind such a evil person just because their Commander in Grief nominated him!!!
