Please help Kevin Shelley - Donate to his legal defense fund today!
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/02/01/BAGL9B3JG11.DTL

The Chronicle today wrote an article basically deriding Kevin Shelley, our Sec of State for only having $250 in his legal defense fund.

"Sacramento -- A special fund set up to help embattled Secretary of State Kevin Shelley pay for his legal defense received just a single $250 donation last year, even as he racked up more than $256,000 in legal and public relations bills, according to a contribution report filed Monday."

If you want to help donate to Kevin Shelley's legal defense fund, you can send donations to his aacountants at:

Olson, Hagel & Fishburn
555 Capitol Mall
Suite 1425
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 442-2952

Make checks out to Legal Defense Fund . I am sending a check for $100. today.

I asked and they don't have a website up for online donations but will call me back later about their plans to do so.

2. Even Democrats in the legislature are calling for him to resign
A top Dem suggests Shelley quit

Some senators expect secretary of state, probed over use of federal funds, to resign

Sacramento -- One of the Legislature's highest-ranking Dem- ocrats suggested Monday that embattled Secretary of State Kevin Shelley should resign, a dramatic sign that support from Shelley's own political party is quickly evaporating.

State Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, told The Chronicle she expects Shelley to resign and that it would be better for the party if he did. She questioned whether he can effectively run elections in California.

Shelley faces multiple investigations about a fund-raising scandal and allegations of misconduct in office. He is scheduled to testify under oath before a legislative hearing next week about a state audit that concluded he mismanaged federal voting act money.

3. The Chronicle has been sliming Shelley for MONTHS.
Check out their archives. And they've presented everything in the worst possible light.

It is true that some Dems have bailed on him; Art Torres has not.

5. Six newspapers have now called for him to resign
2:33 p.m. January 27, 2005

SACRAMENTO – Two more California newspapers called Thursday for the departure of Secretary of State Kevin Shelley from public office, following four other calls by major newspapers since Tuesday for him to resign or be impeached.

The Sacramento Bee and Santa Rosa Press Democrat said Thursday that Shelley has become ineffective while combating numerous charges and investigations into his performance in office.

"That scratching sound you hear is California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley hanging on by his fingernails," said The Bee. "It's a futile effort. Shelley must go and soon."

"Shelley cannot legitimately run California's elections when the legality of his actions and his ability to run the secretary of state's office fairly and competently are in question," added the Press Democrat.

13. I wonder if he was a Republican, if the Rs would be asking the same
I really doubt it. I suspect the Republicans would stick by the guy, just like they almost always do. I just wish we were as good at attacking the Rs as we are at attacking each other, regardless of the circumstances.

I've been reading about his situation in the online papers (sfgate, mercurynews) for months. I really think he did the country a great service by bringing all the Diebold certification issues to the forefront and I have to wonder if he'd be facing all this scandal mess had he not taken on the DRE voting machine issue. I may be wrong, but I just think he'd be sailing happily along if he'd never taken on Diebold.

4. Shelly's hands are dirty
Don't get me wrong. I am a true blue Democrat and I hate Bush and the Republicans. However, it would be naive to think that each and every Democrat who has ever lived is incorruptible.

Shelly is an embarrassment to the California Democratic Party and he needs to go for the good of the party. We can't afford to give the Republicans this type of ammunition.

7. Disagree respectfully. Shelley needs to sit this out for the good
of the electorate.

We can put up with a little embarrassment if it means saving the CA vote.

How thin is our skin? Do you think Tom DeLay would quit under these charges? Hell no.

8. To make my position clear, I don't know that Shelley is clean
or if he is dirty. Or something in between.

And, I'm sorry if I sound strident about this issue.

I do know this. As soon as he decertified Diebold, the attack dogs went after him. It has to make you think twice, about all the charges and about the bigger picture.

He hasn't been found GUILTY of ANYTHING. So, why are we ditching him at this point? Don't we want to play all nine innings?

I'm going to support this guy. I don't care if he paved his driveway in GOLD with HAVA money. HAVA was a one-way ticket for Repug machines to deliver Repug results for Repug candidates in the first place.

(Please: think "no child left behind= poor school districts left behind; clear skies = mercury is transparent. You guys probably know this better than I do.)

Before you toss him out, what about due process? Again, would Tom DeLay just blush and quit? No. Or he'd be HISTORY by now, not calling the shots in Texas.

They have to get Shelley out of office, appoint a Diebold Repug and there goes California.

This really isn't about Shelley. It's about our VOTE.

(Okay, timing out. Beth)

11. Thanks!
Shelley could be pure as the driven snow and the Republicans would still find a way to go after him.

I don't doubt there's some irregularities - there's a lot of corruption in Sacramento - but that's the point - if this was about a genuine drive to root out corruption, Gavin Newsom and Arnold S. would be far higher on the list.

As for the HAVA investigation, they can't say on the one hand that Kevin Shelley is suspected of all these charges and then on the other hand, completely ignore the huge irregularities in Ohio.
