Will the Democrats stand and applaud for Bush during SOTU?
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 03:32 PM by BullGooseLoony
On anything?

Was thinking it might be a nice signal to send him if we didn't stand for him at all. Just spatterings of polite applause.

That's a pretty nasty one, but on the other hand, if we stand for some things, and not others ("Invading Iraq and freeing the Iraqis was the right thing to do!"), the RW echo machine'll chew us up. Might be better to just give total opposition.

Just throwing out ideas. How do you all think the Democrats should handle tomorrow's speech?

1. I have a dream: they turn their backs
They stand up and then ... turn around.

2. They should get up and walk out
or at the very least just sit there stony faced. They should not applaud at all, but methinks they will.

10. they did that to Clinton in 1999
after impeachment. As it is the Dems should applaud Bush for not choking to death on a pretzel and being able to walk to the podium unassisted.

5. Oh, I think they'll applaud. The question is, what will they SAY.
They don't want to look disrespectful of the office of the presidency or -- horrors! -- like "sore losers." And in fact, a gesture like turning and walking out would probably alienate many of the people we need to reach with the truth of what is happening in this country. It wouldn't give any explanation or information, it would only show disrespect. Many people would interpret that as disrespect for the blivet**'s office and their congressional colleagues.

I think the real test will be in what they SAY about the SOTU and how aggressive they are in saying it. There is absolutely no excuse for failing to criticize the speech in terms of its content of facts, omissions, misrepresentations, and falsehoods.

6. Anyone who voted "yes" on the war needs to stand and be embarrassed
Only those who voted "no" should sit on their hands.

13. I want more Ted Kennedy eye rolling, looking at watch, guffawing
at DimSon's more idiotic statements. Maybe throwing spitballs at each other, kicking the chairs of Repukes in front of them, arm pit fart sounds during the "solemn" moments......okay I know that's very immature, undignified and rude but that suits my mood today. :o

14. We should treat Bush like the GOP/media treated Clinton, Gore & Kerry.
And we should give that as our reason for doing so.

"Oh, sorry Wolf, I thought that after all your extensive Limbaugh/ Swiftboat type coverage of Democrats that you were FOR disrespect in civics...

"Brit, do you mean its okay to report that Kerry faked his purple hearts, but its disrespectful not to clap for a Prez. who lied to us about the reasons for war? How does that make sense?"

"...At least we didnt make anything up."

17. We should not stoop to their level.
We ought to demonstrate class and dignity and be the Loyal OPPOSITION.
If it were up to me, I'd have all Dems sit on their hands except for the time he walks in and walks out.
