Mich. Sheriff to Run for U.S. Senate against Stabenow
DETROIT - Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Monday he run next year for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Debbie Stabenow.
...
Bouchard, 48, was appointed as Oakland County sheriff in 1999, then elected to the position in 2000 and re-elected in 2004. He served in the state Senate from 1991 to 1999.

Stabenow was elected to the Senate in 2000, narrowly beating Sen. Spencer Abraham (news - web sites), who was seeking a second term. She had served four years in the House of Representatives and 16 years in the state Legislature.

Other Michigan Republicans considering a Senate run in 2006 are Abraham's wife, Jane Abraham; real estate developer Peter Cummings; Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca; and the Rev. Keith Butler. Industrial engineer Bart Baron already is running.

2. Gorcyca is the only one I think could beat her
He has a lot of appeal, is a good speaker and has gotten the headlines by charging the Indiana Pacers and the Pistons fans with offenses for the Palace brawl. His office is the only prosecutors' office to successfully prosecute Dr. Kervorkian. If he ran as a moderate republican, he'd be tough to beat.
I know a lot of liberal dems who voted for him for prosecutor. That doesn't necessarily mean they'd vote for him for senator, but you never know in this state.

The thing is that he is a moderate. Are the West Michigan christian conservatives going to get behind him? Or will they push their own Betsy DeVos approved candidate?

3. Post-9/11, the elevation of 'macho.' A sheriff vs a former
'60s coffee-house folk-guitar playing housewife.

I hope the former housewife wins, since she's the one who really cares about how Michiganders experience life in America.

Many people will vote for Sen. Stabenow. She does care about the people and the environment of this state.

She is truly the senator for all Michiganders
