Grand Rapids Michigan Mayor set to lead "Bush rebellion"
Heartwell set to lead 'rebellion'
Wednesday, February 09, 2005
By Jim Harger
The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- Mayor George Heartwell says he's so mad, he's ready to take on President Bush.

After enduring the "toughest week" of his 13 months in office, Heartwell said Tuesday he wants to "start a rebellion" against Bush's budget proposal to cut federal funding for local communities by 50 percent.

"He has to address the deficit he created with massive tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest Americans; and he has to fund a war that is expensive and unpopular," Heartwell said.

"So he targets the poor and the unemployed -- and in most cases the minorities, because racism has rendered them the poorest -- to shoulder the burden of tax relief and funding for the war.

"Well, because the poor are outside our doors -- because they are our neighbors -- local government is once again holding the bag."

4. Bush Rebellion may not be the best name.
It seems like he is rebelling for Bush and not against him when it is phrased like that.

5. Well, well , well, maybe now some of the religous right will notice
just how "godly" * is...

"Heartwell, who is ordained in the United Church of Christ, said his rebellion against injustice won't stop "until God's reign of justice permeates our world."

7. Rebellion against the Wealth Care Pres.
We all know that the Rethugs are 100% for Welfare for the Wealthy, esp. the Multi-Corps, who don't give a damn about American workers. The Bush Junta Fascists are determined to destroy the Middle Class and turn it into the Working Poor and the Poor into more homeless.

Governors of all the states should be outraged!

6. Rebellion In Western Michigan? Times Sure Have Changed
That used to be the bastion of Gerry Ford and Guy Van Der Jagt...what a Detroit friend of mine used to call "The Dark Side" of the state. I guess no longer.

Good to see another voice speak up...we're gonna need a lot more just to get heard these days.

9. I think it's still the dark side with a glimmer of hope
I would venture to say that there are a number of Bush "pioneers" living in that part of the state what with the Amway folks. If you had to pick the top 10 communities where large numbers of Republican money folks live, Grand Rapids would be right up there.

Nice to see someone living there with a conscience. Maybe he'll transform the area.

10. The poor don't vote
plain and simple. If the poor voted, Bush* would not be in office. There are far more poor to average households than wealthy households in America. So go figure.
