Fiery Howard Dean the hottest ticket in town
Friday's public rally a sellout in 2 1/2 hours
By Mike Belt, Journal-World

Monday, February 21, 2005

"Howard Dean's popularity hasn't waned in Lawrence since his failed Democratic presidential campaign began more than two years ago.

A total of 895 tickets for his Friday appearance at a public rally for the Democratic Party at Liberty Hall were sold in about 2 1/2 hours Sunday." END SNIP (And someone posted elsewhere that they may have speakers to the outdoor overflow crowd).

A line forms outside Liberty Hall, 642 Mass., where tickets went on sale Sunday for an event featuring Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. His rally will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hall.

1. People waiting in line for tickets to a political event (without guest
appearances by any rock stars or actors)...pretty great!

2. It isn't the first time

We love political figures. There were lines for Carville when he came last year & Clinton's appearance had to moved to historic Allen Fieldhouse. Then who can ever forget our receptions for K/E (around 1000 at 1:30 a.m.) and John & Elizabeth.

(original caption for picture: The crowd for John Edwards filled the parking lot and area around City Hall and the Riverfront Plaza as thousands came to see the Decomcratic canidate.)

We live in Big Blue Country in a red state.

34. Edwards went back to Lawrence in the general
That's when the Kerry-Edwards train flew through in the middle of the night, and the Edwards went back to thank them for showing up on the train track in the middle of the night, The pictures were great. Lawrence is a great town. Dean will get a great response. Hope he talks to all of Kansas, though. That Thomas Frank book can be his talking points.

5. IF any generous DU'ers in the area have one extra ticket, please
contact me. I tried to make it up to Lawrence for the on-sale, but family obligations were more pressing.

PLEASE HELP!

7. I heard there would be speakers placed outside.
Maybe you should go anyway. Dean has a practice of going outside to speak to overflows.

8. They are going to have to close off Mass. That's a narrow sidewalk for as
many people as I anticipate will show up anyway. It's too bad that can't move it to the Fieldhouse. But, there is a private reception celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Fieldhouse on the same night.

Since it looks like I'll be going to both events, it should be a great night!

I'm really sorry about missing the event, but it's heartening to see all those Dems turning out for Dean. I can't say I'm at all surprised. :yourock:

9. If the old line Dems will give Dean his rein
They will be amazed at how well he will do....punditocracy and "scream-clips" notwithstanding.

A prediction I will stand by.

10. I can't be there on Friday
but will be watching for updates. I am so impressed with Dr. Dean. We are starving for attention in Kansas. I think he can give us the inspiration we need.

Another view from that KE rally last summer. It was awesome.

thing. For our party. For our country. For our future.

BTW, the NEXT step is to badger the local papers and TV/radio stations with the inevitable question - "there were TONS of people here. WHERE WERE YOU?!?!?!? Why wasn't this covered?"

We have to go, and then back it up.

24. Article about his two days there, also in Topeka. GOP lectures again.
It is like they are warning that Dean's appearance might harm the governor. Then they point out she is not appearing with Dean while he is there. She well may have other plans, but are they really so afraid in states like that? Are they really afraid of an honest man who stands up for what he believes?
OR even worse, are they afraid of the criticism of the Republicans?

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/news/special_packages/election2004/10974649.htm?1c

SNIP.."KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (KRT) - "Talk about stepping into the lion's den. On Thursday, Howard Dean, the newly elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee, begins a two-day trip to Kansas, a state that hasn't gone Democratic in a presidential race since 1964. And it recently rated as the third-most-Republican state in the country in a national survey.

That, Dean said, is precisely why he's coming.

"I don't think Democrats are ever going to be a national party unless we bring our message to every state, and that includes Kansas," he said in an interview. "If we don't start today, how are we ever going to carry the state?"

SNIP..."Republicans, though, said Dean was too liberal for Kansans and that his appearance could damage Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' re-election bid next year.

"The good news of this development is that the large majority of Kansans now know with certainty that they do not share similar values with ... Sebelius and her political party," said Tim Shallenburger, Kansas GOP chairman.

A spokeswoman for Sebelius said the governor had prior engagements and would not appear with Dean during his stay....."

29. CNN just mentioned it as an upcoming story.
They showed Dean as already in Kansas, saying Sebellius "refuses" to appear with him. That is not what the story said, but I think it may not have been too wise. They will misquote and divide over this, when it may have been nothing.

25. A public appearance but you have to buy a ticket?
WTF?

By purchasing a ticket it automatically becomes a private event.

GO DEAN for selling a ton of tickets.

I think it's time the good doctor got a rock band and made some hard cash while promoting his equitable values and the American hemp farms.

35. The Repubs are sniping because of *fear*. They don't like to see
Kansas getting attention from the national Democratic party, especially from a man who isn't afraid to say what he thinks. They have to be aware that there are many people here who could be swayed to vote Democratic if they hear the truth.
