Who votes straight party ticket? |
|
Just curious because I do not. When it comes to elections other then the Presidency I vote for the best candidate and it is not always a Democrat. Some people just call themselves Democrats to run for office.
What brought this up was people in the election conspiracy section seem to think that a local Democrat getting 8000 votes and Kerry only getting 5000 votes is proof of fraud. I do not see it that way. You just had some people that did not like Kerry but like other Democratic candidates.

I just like democratic policies better. In March I'm to vote for a new mayor and living in the south it's hard to know if a democrat will be on the ticket. There are a few good canidates running that I'm interested in and are republicans. It's one of those tough things because now days it's hard to know who is a neocon and who is a republican.

4. I don't, but if you are talking about Connally.... |
|
...that's a different story. That all has to do with the fact that she spent nearly nothing campaigning where that happened, and her opponent spent a great deal, as well as being conservative in a conservative county.
Usually I vote mostly dems, and occasionally a Green or Independent, or every once in a while a Libertarian when they need votes to stay on the ballot as an offical party. I won't vote for Republicans even when they are running unopposed. They'd be better off as independents if they wanted my vote.

5. nope, but if I don't know the candidates, then I vote for the Dem. |
|
Some of the very downticket races have candidates that I might not know. I figure the Democrat should be a safer bet in that case.
Just so you don't think I have my head in the sand, I'm in college and don't live in the state where I vote.

I have since found out that straight dem vote in some precincts either defaulted to b*sh or other third party presidential candidate.

If there is only a republican and a Green or some other independent running, I will vote for that other person, not the republican.
I'll vote Dem, I'll vote Green, I'll even vote Libertarian (shudder) but I will NOT vote republican.
On edit, I see what you are asking. No, I don't hit the straight party button. I go down the ticket and mark each one.

Corporatist Democrats lose my vote to Greens/Socialists/Corporatist Republicans. If I want to vote Republican I'll vote Republican not Democrat.
Kick the DLC and their allies to the curb and I'll vote straight tickets.

All elected Republicans strengthen Bush and the corporate takeover of America in one way or another, be they Senator or Dogcatcher.
No Republicans for any office. Period.
Democrats must unite.

12. Didn't used to, but I do now |

I vote straight Dem for two reasons:
1. They're the only alternative with a chance of winning, even when I don't especially like the candidate
2. The Repugs have proven over and over that they hate anyone who isn't a rich white heterosexual Xtian-fundamentalist male.
And now I have an even better reason: Because the Republican Party has proven itself to be the party of legalized torture.

13. I use to vote for the best candidate. Then Reagan got elected and |
|
then he fired me. I vote consistently AGAINST all republicans every change I get. One of the few joys in life anymore. Every time one of the jerks get in the White House, I have to get a new career. The last 25 years I've been a programmer - tons of unemployment there.

until last year. I was living in Indiana for 5 months, and could not bring myself to vote for Evan Bayh for Senate. I left that race blank -- the first time I have not voted for a Democrat when I had the opportunity. I still didn't vote against him though...

You cannot possibly know each candidate from dog catcher to president...know their personal philosophy and voting record, etc. I vote for the party always.

I vote for the most progressive candidate with a realistic chance of winning. 9 times out of 10, that's the Democratic candidate.

18. I don't. I vote for the best person possible, though sometimes I vote for |
|
the best person possible with a chance of taking office, even if (s)he is not actually the best person on the ballot. (Ie Kerry instead of Cobb or Nader) I hate doing that, though, and hope that one day we will have ranked voting instead of plurality.

I stand by this statement so much, I am going to vote for an asshole for Mayor in a non-partisan race because I won't vote for a Republican. I know the party affiliations of the candidates even though it's an allegedly "non-partisan" race.
