Operation "AWKWARD MOMENT" - How Liberals Can Affect Change in the Media |
|
Kurtz, Blitzer, Woodward, Novak, Limbaugh, Hume, O'Reilly, Brooks, Krauthammer and the other right wing media whores have the audacity to make their livings by sliming everything Liberal, yet they live and work in some of the "bluest" cities in America. They enjoy the culture, fine dining and all the other amenities of a liberal city while at the same time attacking liberals as traitors and scum. I think that Liberals need to start organizing a campaign to confront these people any place they might pop up. I liken it to the "Act up" campaigns of the gay activists of the 80's & 90's.
Even more effective would be a campaign to identify and confront the mid level and low level employees at these networks. The "stars" are well insulated against the slings and arrows of the general public and because of the vast amounts of money being paid to them, they are willing to say and do anything to keep the gravy train running on time. These low and mid level folks might not be so willing to suffer the stigma of working for such companies for so little pay. I am talking about the people that have a direct involvement in producing and airing the daily barrage of lies and slime. It is the producers, editors, reporters and copy writers.
In essence, if these media whores want to attack and slime everything liberal, they should be encouraged to do it from let's say Alabama or Texas or Mississippi. It is the height of hypocrisy that these people should attack everything liberal and still enjoy all the benefits of a liberal city.

1. Sounds promising. So how do you plan to organize this? |

By the way, red state/blue state is a Radical RW frame, and whenever we use it, we advance THEIR agenda. The only real division in this nation is the one between the people and the greedy, manipulative corporatists.

What about the religious fundamentalist American Christian Taliban?
You might be right about the red state/blue state frame, but that seems a minor element in comparison with the cancerous effect of the daily serving of unvarnished propaganda Americans are receiving at the hands of these media outlets.

11. But do you have an answer to MY question? |
|
You didn't answer it. I think your idea is promising, but it's going to require some organization. What's your plan?
The leaders of the religious right ARE corporatists in religious clothing, while the majority of their rank and file are tools that they're manipulating. Read "What's the Matter with Kansas" for more about that.
And the "red state/blue state frame" IS unvarnished propaganda that Americans don't NEED to receive at the hands of these corporate media outlets - BECAUSE WE'RE DELIVERING IT FOR THEM. So, while it was a side point, it's important to note, and let's stop promoting it.

12. I will heed your advice about red/blue state framing. |

I also agree that the leaders of the religious right are "corporatists" in different garb using different language.
My purpose in posting this thought was to hopefully inspire people in those cities where these people and companies are located and also inspire people that have experience at organizing these things. I admit that I have my hands full trying to establish a liberal media outlet in a red....ooops, I mean very conservative leaning state.
Maybe there is an activist that will read this and know how to implement such a strategy.

4. Well I guess we could just do nothing. |
|
We could just shut our eyes and continue to let these lie factories spew propaganda until the brownshirts are goose stepping through New York. Nothing is free in this world. My point is that these people should be stigmatized and ridiculed publicly for their involvement in the killing of American democracy. They should be made to THINK about what they are doing and maybe they can change things form the inside or leave those companies. It is extremely doubtful that these networks will pull up stakes and leave the "blue" cities, but that doesn't mean we can't make their endeavors to lie and deceive more expensive and less acceptable. My statement in the original post about going to Alabama etc. was just gratuitous embellishment. I do not think they would do that.

7. Well, just my opinion, but I prefer to support Media Matters, Air America, |
|
other organizations, lots of liberal blogs, work with DFA/NY on framing and media relations, etc. And I have my eyes open when I do all of this.

3. I really believe we have to build our own media now. |
|
Trying to reform the MSM is just like it sounds--pick up a hooker somewhere and try to turn her into marriage material.

5. Damn right--Saul Alinsky would love it. Now we need names and |
|
work places.
Also, the confronters would need a few guidelines--absolutely no violence or threat of violence, break no laws, etc.
Simply asking the con-whores "why they don't move to a red state where they'd feel more comfortable" by a lot of people repeatedly would probably get the message across.

I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about espousing making them miserable personally, but OTOH, why the hell not? Why NOT make them feel the effects of their hypocrisy, incompetence, laziness, ineptitude, and general corporate sell-out/shill/fascism enabling and promoting performance? People are DYING because they're not doing their proper, CONSTITUTIONALLY-protected jobs of informing The People. Why shouldn't they get some rather rough (tho never physical) personal comeuppance?
