MOVIE REVIEW: “THE SUM OF ALL FEARS” DOESN’T ADD UP

By now everyone knows the basic plot of this Tom Clancy thriller brought to the silver screen. Ben Affleck takes over the role of Dr. Jack Ryan, a Russian analyst for the CIA. A neo-Nazi sends a nuclear bomb to the Super Bowl in Baltimore where it is detonated. In the ensuing confusion, Ryan struggles to prevent World War III.

The movie falls apart after the bomb goes off. While Hollywood usually exceeds all boundaries of good taste, morality and sensitivity, this film is disappointingly tame. After the explosion, scenes of the destruction are muted. The burning of Atlanta in “Gone With the Wind” appeared more devastating. A helicopter is knocked from the sky, but Morgan Freeman’s character survives not only the crash, but also the blast. I assume the standing-room-only crowd in the football stadium perished, but not once is a death toll enumerated. There is no talk of radiation contamination or post-detonation horrors. Such an unprecedented and catastrophic event becomes merely a backdrop for Affleck’s romance with a woman doctor who predictably survives the attack.

Political correctness infects this flick in the form of an enemy that is hardly credible. Instead of any number of Middle Eastern radical organizations that wish they could perpetrate such infamy, Hollywood goes for one that was neutralized long ago. The Nazis haven’t been a threat for quite some time and aren’t likely to be one anytime soon. Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers comedy would be more believable.

Further, the Mutual Assured Destruction from Russia scenario is no longer our greatest threat. Devastating attacks from an enemy who lives among us and gets aid, comfort and cover from our Middle Eastern “allies” poses far greater danger. This “reality-lite” version of what can happen does a disservice to a population who is still unable to grasp the sum of all fears.

I almost laughed out loud during the Star Trek-style ending. But you’ll have to buy a ticket to see it. Better yet, wait for it on Showtime; it should be there soon.
