In 1978, who said Social Security "will be bust in 10 years"? |
|
Bush had long been intrigued by the idea of allowing workers to put part of their Social Security taxes into stocks and bonds. One Tuesday in the summer of 1978, in the heat of his unsuccessful race for a House seat from West Texas, Bush went to the Midland Country Club to give a campaign speech to local real estate agents and discussed the issue in terms not much different from those he uses now.
Social Security "will be bust in 10 years unless there are some changes," he said, according to an account published the next day in The Midland Reporter-Telegram. "The ideal solution would be for Social Security to be made sound and people given the chance to invest the money the way they feel." http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,600115059,00.html

Politicians have been saying Social Security will be bust in x (pick your favorite number) years for as far back as I can remember. Which is coming up on 50 years.

7. Probably would have been |

Thats why the SS tax was doubled in the 80s.
We were supposed to use the money gained from Reagan's huge tax hike to ensure Social Security's solvency indefinitely, but instead every year since then we have spent every dime of that surplus.

12. He has totally flip-flopped on protecting the trust funds too |
|
In 2000 he said:
“All Social Security funds in the federal surplus must stay where they belong — dedicated to Social Security. In my economic plan, more than $2 trillion of the federal surplus is locked away for Social Security. For years, politicians in both parties have dipped into the trust fund to pay for more spending. And I will stop it.” (George W. Bush, Rancho Cucamonga Senior Center, May 15, 2000)
Bush in 2005: There is no trust fund:
“Some in our country think that Social Security is a trust fund — in other words, there’s a pile of money being accumulated. That’s just simply not true. The money — payroll taxes going into the Social Security (is) spent. They’re spent on benefits and they’re spent on government programs. There is no trust.” (President Bush, Feb. 9 2005)
