Your opinion: CAFTA, Good idea or another nail in the coffin ?
The Bush Administration has come up with CAFTA, Central American Free Trade Agreement, an expansion of NAFTA. CNN called a "secret agreement". Do you think it is good for the country or bad for the country?

2. You want to be leery of anything the Chimp Admin wants to do.
I am sure its only good for vested corporations. Not you and me. Not those in Central America.

3. Post industrial US has few options...
1) become a colony (not likely unless/until after the collapse)
2) stimulate some corporate colonies
3) maintain all your corporate colonies

We KNOW which options the Neocons are working on.

American corporations are looking for a good deal. The universe being what it is, on the other side of every good deal is a not so good deal.

13. nice to find a kindred spirit !!
i just finished Chapter 31 ... i hate to ruin it for you but "the butler did it" ...

the book confirms what i always knew existed but never had a first hand account like this to support ...

at some point, i plan to take a poll on DU to ask something like:

if you knew the only way to prevent a total economic collapse of the US was to continue the exploitation and global hegemony by America's multi-national corporations, would you support the policy ???

I'll never forget that scene in "Three Days of the Condor" where the CIA guy tells Robert Redford that the Middle East policy is justified because that's what the American people want them to do ... turn off their heat and take away their electricity (something like that) and then see just how moral they really are ...

we're hooked like junkies and far too few of us understand that everyday without an energy plan and alternative energy leads us one step closer to disaster ...

5. Please contact your Washington Representatives!!!!!
Let's try to stop CAFTA if on no other basis that our outrage and resentment as a result of the effects of NAFTA the middle class has felt.

It not only expands NAFTA but makes it worse. This is another arm of world government by corporations.

11. You Americans needs to oppose it fiercely...
There is no chance it won't be approved in Central American countries, and even one already ratified it. The only chance to stop it is in the US Congress.

And no, it won't help anyone in the US, nor anyone in Central America, just big corporations. I believe an intelligent free trade agreement could be negotiated, but Bush is definitely not the person to do it.

16. I don't see how it can be good for the workers in this country.
It will just end up causing more jobs to go to other , cheaper places. The privatization of public goods, like water, can't be good for these 3rd world countries. It will just lead to more people going without. This new agreement does nothing to address the problem of giving multi-national corporations the right to challenge and overturn democratically enacted laws , especially in the area of the environment.

Anyone notice how the list of countries supporting this reads like a who's who list of countries formerly attacked/invaded by the US? El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala. Hmmm.
