Cox kicks off reelection campaign with annual breakfast

By: Julie Buchanan, Staff Writer

COLONIAL HEIGHTS - Neither rain nor lack of parking space could stop supporters of Del. M. Kirkland Cox yesterday morning.

More than 250 people gathered at the Swift Creek Mill Playhouse when the eight-term delegate announced his candidacy for another term in the 66th House District.

Cox, a Republican, has held the office since 1989 but says announcing plans to run never becomes a "formality."

"I still have a burning desire to serve," he said.

Cox made a brief speech to the crowd, filled with state GOP leaders and constituents.

He promised to continue to work on cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay while saving taxpayers money.

"I will scrutinize every program that comes before me," Cox said. "I understand that every dollar you earn is precious."

The guest speaker for Cox's annual "legislative breakfast" was Paul Galanti, a retired U.S. Navy commander who spent seven years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict. Cox, a strong supporter of veterans and the military, said Galanti was one of his earliest supporters.

"There's no one I admire more than Paul Galanti," Cox said. "The word 'hero' is thrown around a lot. But this man is truly an American hero."

Galanti's speech focused on the work of today's Republican Party. According to him, changes made by President Bush will eventually be "more important than changes by George Washington."

"Fifty years from now, people are going to look back and see a major sea change," Galanti said.

He then compared former presidential candidate and Democratic Sen. John Kerry's vision to that of the Communists.

"I got to spend six years and eight months looking at the kind of government John Kerry would like us to have," he said. "We still have some people who want to socialize our society."

Cox, a teacher at Manchester High School in Chesterfield County, was introduced to the stage by a former student, Omar Rajah. Rajah called Cox a "mentor" for his life.

"I will always embrace him as he has embraced me," Rajah said.

Also in attendance were: Sen. Bill Bolling, R-Hanover, a GOP candidate for lieutenant governor, and Del. Bob McDonnell, R-84th, a GOP candidate for attorney general.

Tickets to the event were $35 per person and $50 per couple.

Virginia's Republican primary is June 14.

1. I thought you were referring to Kaine when I read your title
As long as it is a Republican, I am fine.

Now, I have more problems with Kaine, Democratic candidate for Gov:

More Self-Hating Democrats
by Chris Bowers

Speaking of loyalty problems, would it be too late for Virginia to pass a law allowing Mark Warner to run again, as he could in any other state? You would think that the new Democratic nominee, LG Tim Kaine, was running for governor of Alabama, not of swing state Virginia. Consider these recent comments:
"I think that John Kerry demonstrated much more comfort talking about windsurfing and hockey than he did talking about his beliefs," says Kaine, admitting that he does have a limited amount of sympathy for the Massachusetts senator's reticence.(...)

The second thing that Democrats have to do better on is not attacking the `religious right,'" he said. "I think that has been a standard bogeyman that Democrats have often used in campaigns, including campaigns in Virginia. If somebody advances an idea or position that's wrong, then attack them for having a bad idea. But they are not wrong because they are religious.

"When Democrats kind of cavalierly attack the religious right or go after Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell, our candidates have sent the signal to a lot of religious people, `Well, I guess they are not interested in me.' And I think this includes a lot of people who would fit very naturally within the Democratic Party."
This is, um, not exactly what Democrats need in the only southern state that is moving in our direction. How can we hope to build the party in Virginia, and make it a true swing state, when our new standard bearer in that state happily spouts off some of the worst Republican Noise Machine lies about Democrats? Further, he said these things in an interview with the American Prospect for crying out loud, not exactly hostile territory for Democrats.

Paul Waldman responds to Kaine thusly:
Pardon me, but what the fuck are you talking about? John Kerry went windsurfing once during the campaign, and was dumb enough to let news photographers tag along. But he never talked about windsurfing. Few people have been more critical of Kerry's campaign than I have, but that's just about the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.(...)

Show me a single time when someone said, "Jerry Falwell is wrong because he's religious." Jerry Falwell is wrong because he's radical theocrat who has contempt for American values. Democrats shouldn't criticize Falwell - the guy who said God brought September 11 down to punish America for tolerating gays? They shouldn't criticize Pat Robertson - a con man who has made hundreds of millions of dollars stealing from little old ladies, and who writes books full of anti-semitic conspiracy theories? You bet your ass Democrats should criticize them, and they should force Republicans to say whether they embrace the religious values of most Americans, or of radicals like Falwell and Robertson.

2. Shameless opportunistic name dropping
I'm afraid that since the Swift Vets didn't get a proper smack down in the press, the repubs have a newly patented strategy that we'll see again in '06 and beyond.

4. Yep
All you have to do is mention something negative about Kerry. Ugh. Oh and Kerry shouldn't have to talk about his beliefs. It's supposed to be private! Duh! :banghead: It's between you and your God. John Kerry is more of a Christian than George Bush could ever dream of being!
