Chicago Reader: THe Man Works in MYsterious Ways |
|
In the current (April 1, 2005)edition of the Chicago Reader there's a great article by highly respected Ben Joravsky on a side story of the Chicago Police Dept overreaction during the March 19, 2005 Iraq War protests. Unfortunately I can't find it on line but briefly the gist is three yuppie protesters were heading back to their car parked in the Millennium Park public lot after the rally at Federal Plaza when the score or so of cops at the park stopped them and told them they'd be arrested if they came into the park with their signs. The yuppie protesters who were carrying cups of Starbucks explained the protest was over and they were 'off duty' and just wanted to get in their car and book. Cops said OK but not with the signs. One, Daniel Johnson, felt enough was enough and began arguing loudly but logically and respectfully that he spent alot of time making the sign and had a right to carry it in the park to his car. So they handcuffed him, charged him with disorderly contact and carted him away.
Check it out! And ask yourself if you really want to stand for this shit. Anyway hats off to Ben Joravsky and the Reader for having the integrity and balls to cover this incident
