Speech
Bad News: Where the Press Goes Wrong
Woman's National Democratic Club

Harold Ickes , Deputy Chief of Staff (1993-1997), White House
Robert Shogan , Lecturer, Johns Hopkins University, Political Science

After an introduction by Mr. Ickes, Mr. Shogan talked about his book Bad News: Where the Press Goes Wrong in the Making of the President, published by Ivan R. Dee. The book analyzes media coverage of seven presidential elections since the 1968 campaign. Mr. Shogan described how the media have become enablers of the new power behind elections: fundraisers, interest and lobby groups, and pollsters. He says the media now obtains its information from these groups. He discussed the 2000 campaign and said it displayed the worst of the aforementioned qualities. Mr. Shogan took questions at the end of the program.

33. He said he'd never want to take away his right to express his views..
just as he'd never try to silence shock jocks on the right, such as Rush Limbaugh who has said negative things and untruths about many Democrats him (Clark)in the past. He said that politics is a blood sport because each side is vying for the right to hold the highest position of power --the presidency, and expressions of opinions like this from supporters of both sides is what's to be expected during a heated campaign. He said that he did not know about George Bush's record of service at the time, and that it's apparent that Bush did not desert the army according to what we now know, but that there are "irregularities" in his National Guard records that did make it part of the many campaign issues, and that no one will ever be able to get to the bottom of it (refering to missing records etc), but he closed the statement reiterating his support of Moore and anyone's right to express their political views.

39. It took Clark less than a year to master shifting off defense onto offense
in politics, that is. Weaving Limbaugh into his answer with all the under tones of moral hypocrisy is classic. Clark is not at all intimidated by Republican hard ball. He now deflects attacks on himself into attacks on the attacker, and he does it smoothly without over reaching or any loss of poise, so that the last note resonates in his favor. It is a critical talent that many seasoned Democrats never fully master. Clark will be in full stride well before 2008, hell he seems to be there already.

Due to a problem with our furnace I missed all but the last few minutes live, so I will have to catch this one as a rebroadcast. Can't wait.

28. Yeah..
GWB's allowed to publicly defend a drug user but Wes Clark isn't allowed to defend Michael Moore's freedom of speech without showing a severe lack of judgement. That guy was an idiot. "Yeah, man, I'd rather vote for a deserter than vote for a guy who didn't wallop a guy who said he was a deserter." I also liked the way General Clark called the guy on having said that Wes had laughed at what Michael Moore said. The guy said he "saw" it. Yeah, well, if he saw it, how come he didn't know that Wes wasn't on stage and that Wes didn't laugh?

I think a Clark/Feingold ticket would also more likely lead to victory, for several reasons. But now is not the time to quibble. They are both excellent choices for national leadership.
