Wisconsin administrator's remark on women sparks reaction

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Transportation will review the pay and promotion of women employees, after some workers were upset to hear an administrator say women in his division often aren't promoted because of their family duties at home.

Kevin Chesnik, administrator of transportation infrastructure development in the Department of Transportation, made his comments at a conference last week before at least 200 employees, as reported Friday by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The conference had been called, at least in part, to discuss a department reorganization in which Chesnik's staff is to be folded into a new division headed by Chesnik. The new division is to include the department's fair-employment functions......

At the conference, an employee asked Chesnik why more women weren't promoted. Chesnik responded that it was hard to find women for high-level jobs because of their roles as mothers, some in attendance told the Journal Sentinel.

Chesnik said Thursday he immediately knew he had not given an adequate response.

3. As an unmarried, childless woman
I call bullshit on that! If it's not your family status, they'll find some other reason not to promote you, trust me.

11. This is EXACTLY why the Equal Rights Amendment is STILL needed.
20 years ago, when the ERA was ALMOST passed, Women were patronized and made to feel silly for wanting it "in writing." Women kept being told that they already had equal footing.

Right...

And today when people refer to the EEOC and Affirmative Action, it is almost always referenced ONLY with regard to equal rights for Blacks. The 'blind' assumption STILL being that Women don't need that protection...that it's just not an 'issue' for them.

Ha! Thank you Mr. Chesnik for telling it like it TRULY is...even in these modern times.

10. "You’re a single mother who also attends school. We can’t hire you.

You don’t sound like you’d be dependable."

An asshole actually told me that during an interview.
