Congress is trying to cap Goodwill donation tax deductions
I go to to donate at the Goodwill today, and they have me fill out a short survey since Congress is trying to pass a law that no matter how much you donate, you can only claim a $500 deduction on your tax return. I looked it up when I got home:

Goodwill needs your help. Congress is examining the possibility of capping the tax deduction a donor can take for clothing and household goods donated to charities. The recommendation from the Joint Committee on Taxation would limit the tax deduction to $500 per year, per tax payer. Goodwill is working with a coalition of other non-profits to head off this proposal.

1. Figures!
Of course they want to do this. congress already basically eliminated the ability to get a deduction for contributing a vehicle with the provisions which went into effect this year.

5. seriously
why don't the just "settle" with one more person that used the Son of Boss tax shelter. That could bring in, what, another $10 to 500 million? Oh wait, going after the Goodwill donations is much better :eyes:

3. Oh, I thought Bush wanted Charities to pick up the load of
things the government used to do, but now they do not want people to donate to charities.

but the only charity they recognize is the GOP, preferably with a check made out directly to them, their wife or for their daughter's baby shower.

6. Thanks for alerting us to this. I emailed my Congressman
(unfortunatley, it's a Republican), but at least I can say I tried, eh?

8. I have never thought of Goodwill as a charity
it is a business.

For instance, here in Maine, LL Bean donates ,or did a few years back, items to Goodwill FREE.

A few years ago, I was in a Goodwill and took note of the LLBean winter coats that were on a rack.

Nice coats--except that the price was anywhere from fifty to one hundred dollars! I am not kidding.

Disturbed by this, I called LLBean and inquired if they indeed did donate items to Goodwill, free, and then reported the prices that Goodwill was charging on the items they got FREE from LLBean. I don't know if they have changed that, but Goodwill , in spite of it's name, is NOT a charity. It is in the business of selling used items and that is all.

Salvation Army is a charity, but we also know about them and their bigotry in hiring.

so that makes them a charity? My local supermarket also hires mentally challenged individuals from the community home and pays them.

11. People in a community home
are way above the typical GoodWill employee. We are talking around an IQ of 60. They do pay them by the way.

12. It doesn't matter what they charge in their stores
that's not their charitable mission. It's about what they do with the income from the store sales that determines whether they're a charity.
