Sen "BAD MO FO" Reid's Truth to power statement from today - |
|
Quite an inspirational bitch-slapping -- :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank:
Reid Statement
I am disappointed that in an attempt to hide what the debate is really about, Senator Frist would exploit religion like this. Religion to me is a very personal thing. I have been a religious man all my adult life. My wife and I have lived our lives and raised our children according to the morals and values taught by the faith to which we prescribe. No one has the right to judge mine or anyone else’s personal commitment to faith and religion.
God isn’t partisan.
As His children, he does ask us to do our very best and treat each other with kindness. Republicans have crossed a line today. America is better than this and Republicans need to remember that. This is a democracy, not a theocracy. We are people of faith, and in many ways are doing God’s work. But we represent all Americans, regardless of religion. Our founding fathers had the superior vision to separate Church and State in our democracy. It is a fundamental principle that has allowed our great, diverse nation to grow and flourish peacefully. Blurring the line between Church and State erodes our Constitution, and our democracy. It is a blatant abuse of power. Participating in something designed to incite divisiveness and encourage contention is unacceptable. I would hope that Sen. Frist will rise above something so beyond the pale.

I was lukewarm about his originally, but he's showing some cojones. I think we're starting to turn the tide against these bastards, and Sen. Reid is playing a big part in that.

So true and they can't claim democrats aren't religious either. All you have to do is look at our last few democratic president's. They've all been apart of some form of Christianity whether Catholic, Baptists etc. It's disgusting what the republicans are doing and people going along with it. I like how they've been having these nice little catch phrases. Like "democracy not theocracy" and "fix it don't nix it." ;)

22. Reid is very clever and/or he's got some clever staff. |
|
I saw him speak the day the RNC circulated their "hit piece" on him. He was just devastating, really laid them out, and said it in such a confident way you knew his mind was working overtime to f' them up.
I think that they made a big mistake attacking his family with that piece (not that this is personal). He's got that extra motivation.

11. Wow! I am impressed. Thank God I read DU. |
|
I would probably not have encountered it otherwise.
What really confounds me about the religious right, is that Reid's quote is pretty much how Southern Baptists used to defend the separation of Church and State. Baptists in particular were early champions of the concept having been persecuted for their faith way back in the day.
It's funny how power corrupts and/or history seems to be hugely selective.

14. Agree about personal interpretation of the Bible. |
|
That was big time as well as the whole separation of Church/State in my religious teachings. Somehow that whole personal interpretation seems to have gone awry when the Republican Congress can convene to grand stand about removing a feeding tube from a brain-dead vegetable, but can’t even blink when there is open genocide in the Sudan.
I have to wonder whom these religious right guys and gals are really speaking for? Something is way out of balance to me.
Anyway, thank you, H&E for your heads up on the AB. I will have to check them out. I wonder if they have any roots in the historic Danbury Baptists.

I think they all just might as well pray to the bank who is their real god as money is their religion. Reid doesn't have a lot of standing on this issue. But I agree it is good he said something!

...Reid is a much more savy politician that Frist and I think the Republicans are just beginning to realize it. Yes, I would prefer someone more "in-your-face" that Reid in that position, but maybe Reid's quiet dignity and genuine moral outrage connects better with the average voter.

Here's a guy who knows how to make a statement! Look at the way he wrote, or spoke, that. So clear, so convincing, so powerful.
He takes it to them with such a clear message, and such fearlessness. I respect the more liberal partisan figures like Pelosi and Boxer who aren't afraid to speak their minds, but I REALLY respect the ones who are just really good at it. People who speak like that can't be ignored. Lets not forget his heroic performance in the filibuster a few years ago, going nine hours or so without a break even for the bathroom.

37. Reid is such a welcomed change after years of Daschle |
|
I swear the repukes did us a favor by finally defeating Daschle so we were forced to get a new minority leader. I was hesitant at first because of Reid's pro-life stance. But I can call Reid "Pro-life" because this guy is fighting for the lives of every child here in the United States and to make sure they get healthcare and a good education. Plus he has stuck with the filibuster fight which is clearly to the benefit of those of us who are pro-choice.
I'd still like the repukes to repay for ousting Daschle and I think that'll be returned when we send Santorum packing back to his home state of Virginia. (Pennsylvanians would prefer someone from PA to represent them for awhile)
