Lurking DNCers, Senate/House Aides, Connected Folk: Read this.
This is not the writings of a barking mad nutbar. Just a regular person. It came in my mailbox tonight. Said person is retired and by no means excitable. A rock-steady midwesterner.

Here's what some people out there are thinking and feeling. I have a feeling the writer is not alone in these feelings. In fact I am sure of it.

For god's sake, do something. Lead. Act. Do.

"It really is sad. I used to (40+ years ago) consider myself a
Republican-leaning independent. The moderation and fiscal responsibility they once espoused has long since disappeared. I've slowly discovered that I'm now pretty much homeless, as regards US politics. One party wants to tax and tax, spend and spend. The other wants to spend and spend, and to hell with the taxes & economy -- in addition, it now wishes to take away my right to worship or not worship as I wish.

The present-day Republican/Religious right allegiance has become a fearsome thing. They are all for majority rule, and no minority rights. It is scary. The last time I recall such a political situation really has to be the Nazi party in Germany.

I fear for my grandchildren."

Please: Lead. Act. Do. To the highest yardarms.

2. They should fear not...
They DO have a party around here to call home now...time for them to "move in" with us!:kick:

To parraphrase all of those old-fashioned closet Klansmen who used the same tired old excuse for bolting the Democratic Party in years past(and good riddance to 'em all, too!):

"He didn't leave the Republican Party; the Republican Party left him!":eyes:

B-)

4. So what does Mr/Ms Disgruntled Republican do about it?
Most likely on election-day, they will stay home in protest. Fine. That’s a great passive-aggressive tactic. The big problem with that one is that you don’t get to protest if the outcome was not to your liking if you didn’t actively participate in the first place.

If they are truly fed-up with the practices of their party, then they must take some action about removing their Representatives (at all levels) and replacing them with someone that is truly beholding to them and not some PAC or corporation.

That is more often easier said than done when a voter is asked to choose between the lesser of two evils. But come on… how much lesser does the lesser evil have to be when compared to the current crop of Republicans?

Having got that much off my chest, I agree with you. The Democrats have to show a spine and demonstrate that they are a true party of opposition against these bastards. A bipartisan approach is just too like-minded and we should not be suckered by the false overtones of cooperation.

5. but besides just giving money, what can people do?
Mostly all I hear from dems is to donate money, that's not satisfying. Actually doing something gives me a greater sense of control, of making a difference. What can non-connected people do, when their leaders don't ask for action, just money? Calling ones' representative doesn't make as much of an impact as those lobbyists who meet with them almost daily. That's what I fear is the truth. The people need to have as much contact with their house reps & senators as those lobbyists, because what one hears everyday is soon believed to be true. Thankfully, I found this site, where I have some things in common.

6. three recommended acts everyone should take now
1. Name the evil. Always call it what it is. Name it, frame it. Use the words. Cabal, coup d'etat, repression, fundamentalism, arrogance of power. Dysfunctional systems hide bad behavior. Clarity brings enlightenment and empowerment.

2. Find your proper role in the global struggle against tyranny. Some can only sew stars on flags. (Was Betsy Ross a Unitarian?) Some can only feed others who work for peace and justice. Others can raise money, raise voices, rally consciences. Every effort serves the cause.

3. Support those taking visible roles and leadership positions. Free them to their courageous destiny by providing them with every kind of tangible and intangible tool and affirmation. Surround them with the power of community. Protect them and their families in order to free them to speak truth to power.
