Boxer Calls For Oil Price Investigation
A few days old but this lady is on her way to the nomination in 2008 if she keeps this up!! :thumbsup:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apr. 13 (ABC7) — It was a pretty startling admission from the oil industry -- the head of a major refinery gleefully pronouncing that tight supplies were driving up prices and profits. After reviewing an ABC7 News tape of that event, California Senator Barbara Boxer is now calling for an investigation. Senator Boxer has fired off a letter accusing the oil industry of "making windfall profits on the backs of consumers." ABC7's Mark Matthews reports.
No one else is taking on the Pukes like this lady. She gets my vote!
We have been looking for a fighter for years and one is delivered into our laps and I am surprised others here on DU aren't thinking of a Boxer for President forum?
28. We've started numerous threads to do just that!
I've seen your name on them. We got as far as a mission statement on the last one. Unfortunately, the last person to start the thread was tombstoned and the thread deleted.
So we just have to get our 10 names and submit a mission statement to Skinner.
5. about fucking time someone did!
Do you remember when gas prices spiked up a bit toward the end of Clinton's term. He IMMEDIATELY ordered a DOJ investigation into price gouging and windfall profits looking hard at collusion etc and then released some of the SOR. The prices nosedived.
Of course with Bonehead and his pirates, he chose to FILL the SOR in the face of climbing oil prices.
Thank you Barbara Boxer.
10. All good a fine. But, where was she....
and where were others like Reid four years ago or during the last election count. When we needed democrats in power and position the to stand up and speak out the most there was silence. Don't get your hopes up. It's just more smoke up our butts. They're just covering their butts so when things really turn to crap they won't look so bad in the eyes of the people.
27. Boxer should be a candidate for nominee on '08
She's moving close to the top of the heap among my choices for the '08 ballot, right up there with Clark and Gore. She'd certainly be a 100 times better than Hillary (who'd unify the GOP and practically guarantee a Dem defeat in 2008).
31. better late than never ...
i commend Senator Boxer for her actions ... too bad she had to wait to view an April 13 ABC tape ... if she read DU a little more carefully, she could have seen my post on this and taken the same action more than 2 months ago ...
extracted from a post I made on February 16, 2005:
source: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=1599345
Exxon-Mobil just reported record profits directly traceable to the high price of oil that has resulted from instability in the Middle East ... i don't hear any Democrats calling for a "windfall profits tax" on oil
of course, i was smashed and bashed at the time by DU's "moderates" for criticizing Democrats ... anyway, kudos to Boxer ... i wonder if telling the American people the truth about the exploitation by corporations while young Americans are dying will become a central plank in the platform ... i'm not holding my breath ...
32. linking oil profits to bush's "prolong the war" strategy
many Democrats, worse yet, elected Democrats, think we have to stay in Iraq until we achieve some kind of goal ... i don't think there will be any progress on Iraq as long as corporations are calling the tune ... Iraq is corporate exploitation at its worst ... bush doesn't give a damn about "training Iraqis" ... in fact, just the opposite is true ...
his goal is to prolong the justification for US military operations in the Middle East ... little or no training has been done ... reconstruction funds have not been spent and some are missing ... and Exxon-Mobil recently reported record profits directly attributable to high oil prices which is directly attributable to the instability in the region ...
Senator Boxer would be making a serious mistake not to look for linkage between profits by big oil and bush's motivation to prolong the war ... criticizing "excess profits" is a tough case to make to a country so conditioned to believe in the almighty "free market"; telling the American people the truth that bush and his neo-con friends have sold America down the river (i.e. prolonged the "war") to cater to their corporate friends is what destroying the evil empire is all about ...
Boxer's heading in the right direction; she just needs to tackle the big picture ...
33. It all goes back to the two warring factions in the administration
as desribed by Greg Palast: the dogmatic neocons and Big Oil. Big Oil won. Or didn't you notice the last time you filled your tank? You have to wonder, what will it take for people to catch on that these are all a pack of greedy, power-hungry thieves? Here is the link to this MUST-READ article; there's a link to his BBC broadcast as well.
SECRET U.S. PLANS FOR IRAQ'S OIL
BBC News World Edition
Thursday, March 17, 2005
By Greg Palast
Reporting for BBC Newsnight (London)
Why was Paul Wolfowitz pushed out of the Pentagon onto the World Bank? The answer lies in a 323-page document, secret until now, indicating that the allies of Big Oil in the Bush Administration have defeated neo-conservatives and their chief Wolfowitz. BBC Television Newsnight tells the true story of the fall of the neo-cons. An investigation conducted by BBC with Harper's magazine will also reveal that the US State Department made detailed plans for war in Iraq -- and for Iraq's oil -- within weeks of Bush's first inauguration in 2001.
34. Another question: why are RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES not encouraged
by this administration, who are instead pushing ONLY the energy sources that would benefit their business cronies, like coal and expanded oil drilling in nature preserves?
There has been basically NO encouragement of solar- or wind-powered energy, NO encouragement for energy conservation. Why? Because the profits for Big Oil are what this is about.
Boxer needs to look at this other side of the picture as well: it's not just the high oil prices, it's also the resistance to energy conservation practices and use of anything that does not pay off the Big Oil cronies. The circle is disastrously complete.
35. about freaking time
but with the repugs in control I expect (like most of the investigations) this too will end up under a rug
meanwhile -- regarding the "supply shortage" -- how many tankers are just floating around off shore and are not being allowed to dock and unload?
a friend of ours worked on such a tanker back in the 70's during the "embargo" -- the tanker he was on floated around on the ocean for six weeks before being allowed to dock and unload. He said his tanker wasn't the only one out there
