Bolton denied partnership at law firm due to abusive behavior
http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/000484.html

April 19, 2005
New Allegations Churing about Bolton's Pre-UnderSecretary Behavior

John Bolton was actually voted down by senior partners of Bolton's law firm, Covington and Burling, where he worked before serving in the Department of Justice, because of concerns over his abusive behavior. An individual who would only speak anonymously shared the content of the super-secret partner's meeting with me yesterday.

In addition, after Bolton left the first Bush administration in 1993, he served on the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom and engaged in not only abusive behavior inside that government agency but also worked hard to have two people with whom he disagreed fired. The victims -- who now work at other institutions in Washington -- are reticent about making public claims because of Bolton's continued ability to cause negative consequences for them and their fear that he will seek retribution.

1. Well, if that doesn't get their attention...
then we are truly fucked (and I don't say that lightly).

Did anyone in the Senate committee check this guy's references???

3. Bolton's Abusive Behavior is Exactly Why The Admin LIKES HIM
and wants him for the job. They are purposely putting the biggest, most obnoxious asshole they can find in that position.

10. I can't speak to hennery's source, but there was a ltte in our paper
last week that said the same thing, and several callers to the cspan WJ the other day that voiced the same opinion...that Bolton was just what they wanted; a mad dog to be rough and tough.

Remember, these are the same people who always want to go to war and KILL!

27. No, they're not!
These are the people who always want someone else to go to war and kill. These bastards wouldn't take it so lightly if they had actually served. But to quote our illustrious (not!!) veep, they have "Other priorities".

13. Bully Bolton is not the person to reform the United Nations. Bully Bush
knows this. Bolton is at the United Nations to shove Dubya's agend down the throat of the United Nations.

20. Sounds Like The GOP, Not The UN
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 10:00 AM by Beetwasher
Yeah, the Bush admin. really has the moral high ground to fix the UN of corruption and nepotism and to make it address pressing world problems. I'd call you an idiot, by I don't have to, since you're comments do it quite nicely all on their own. :eyes:

She said that it must have been assault for him to be refused a partnership at a law firm like that. They probably had to pay the subordinates off.

25. It must have been really, really bad
I've worked with some total psychotics who sailed through to partnership. It's all about billable hours and rainmaking.

The only thing I've ever known to cost someone a partnership was exposing the firm to a lawsuit from a subordinate.

11. UPDATE (Dems asking for more time) and BACKGROUND (big Bolton thread)
Here's the update, from today's NYT:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1404697
Thread title (LBN): Delay Is Sought in Vote on U.N. Nominee (NYT update on Bolton)
Looks like some more allegations and witness vetting are planned, and the Dems are asking for extra time to do it. Otherwise, the committee vote would be tomorrow.

Here's the background, a collection of articles, sound files, and discussions on Bolton's history of abusive behavior and many other faults, especially (but not only) the allegations of Melody Townsel. Read through the whole thread for an education on human slime.

28. Anyone hear Democracy Now this morning?
Amy Goodman had a couple of guests on that were very informative about Mr. Bolton. Apparently in 2000, he flew straight from stirring up trouble between North and South Korea, to Florida to act as an attorney for the Bush/Chenney ticket. They said he was instrumental in getting the Florida recount shut down, by doing things like charging into places where they were doing the recount, and declaring, "I am John Bolton, and I am here for Bush/Chenney to stop this recount!". As we've heard from other sources, he apparently bullied people into getting his way, even though he did not have any legal authority to do so. The prime goal was to get it out of the state, and kicked to the Supreme Court, where they could finish killing it for good.
They also said Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN) is in a really bad spot as chair of this committee. He's had some personal experience with Bolton that is not good, but knows what happens to people that don't go along with the party. He is trying to stall so that more of these allegations can come out, and ANYONE can see the Bolton monster for what it is--another payback by Bush for his loyal service in Florida.

34. Turned Down For Partner?
I've worked at a large law firm for nearly 20 years. Law firms never used to look at personality issues when making partnership decisions. That has changed some in the last five years with a growing recognition that the Attila the Hun partner types hurt legal recruiting efforts. That Bolton was turned down more than a decade before largely because of his behavior speaks volumes to me. This guy must be a real whack job.
