Ratzinger sees media vendetta against Church

The Vatican's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has suggested that a campaign is under way against the Church, judging by the way scandals involving priests have been reported in the United States.

The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith shared his views last weekend with a group of journalists attending a conferencein Rome.

He said: "I am personally convinced that the constant presence in the press of the sins of Catholic priests, especially in the United States, is a planned campaign, as the percentage of these offences among priests is not higher than in other categories, and perhaps it is even lower."

"In the United States, there is constant news on this topic, but less than 1% of priests are guilty of acts of this type," he said. "The constant presence of these news items does not correspond to the objectivity of the information nor to the statistical objectivity of the facts.

"Therefore, one comes to the conclusion that it is intentional, manipulated, that there is a desire to discredit the Church. It is a logical and well-founded conclusion."

Get pedophiles out of the priesthood, and there won't be anything negative to report. You know, he seems like a well-educated guy; hard to believe that a solution this simple and obvious has eluded him. I don't condone sexual abuse, but just found it strange that all this came to light after the shrub came into office. I truly believe that was part of the neocon plan. Before you start quibbling on math about Muslims, I said SECT, so if you subtract out Shiites, Catholics win. Persecution to many believers is when they're impeded from complete control by the inferiors.

The Roman Catholic Church NEEDS to win. They need to have more children than anyone else, and they need to control the earth. Hey, no skin off anyone's nose about this, they're basically no different than most other exclusive clubs, it's just that they're more effective and thus tend to get more flagrant in their social recklessness and draw more fire.

Say what you may about some of the liberal precepts of the Church when it comes to social programs--I'll agree with you--it's still a rapacious political organization bent on world domination and pissed off that some damned ingrates messed with their hustle a half a millennium ago.

This is another faith-based CORPORATION that demands to be above reproach, and as such is a classic evocation of conservatism: support your superiors and contribute to your own subjugation.

Religion IS conservative; it's fitting that this enforcer takes the reins. I just want to hear details about how "coerced" he was into joining the Hitler Youth (remember: Hitler was a Catholic, too) and whether his "desertion" from the AA battery to which he was assigned was ideological or pragmatic. Excuse as you may, but he was a soldier of the Third Reich, and to me, that's far too suspect for glossing over without EXTREME DETAIL being brought to bear.

Amid the gushing of love for the last Pope, it would be wise to remember that he wasn't a liberal either, and his culpability with fascism and atavism is well documented.

12. On the point regarding the amount of press coverage

he is correct. There is a concerted effort on the part of the Bushbot fundies and Moon to try to discredit the RC church. Most fundies do think that the pope is the anti-christ and hate catholics. I've seen it first hand and I'm not even a practicing catholic anymore.

However, the churches response to dealing with pedophile priests is just has bad if not worse.

Maybe Ratzy is right that the percent of priests compared to the general pop is about the same but that is just not acceptable. PRIESTS are supposed to be held to a higher standard. Number one they have taken a vow of celibacy which means no sex with ANYONE. Second they claim that they are between us and god, they put themselves higher than us. They are supposed to holier than the rest of us.
