ELEPHANT PANIC
Folks, I hope this has not been posted already. It is worth the reread if it has been posted already.

ELEPHANT PANIC

John Podhoretz
NYPost.com

April 22, 2005 -- REPUBLICANS and conservatives are beginning to panic a little. Ever since the Terry Schiavo controversy took its unexpected turn against the Right in polls — I say "unexpected" because major Democratic politicians acted as though they thought the issue would benefit the GOP when it was taken up in Congress back in February — Republicans are privately worried that they're losing touch with the American people.

The president's decision to focus the first months of his second term on Social Security reform seems to have backfired, with the public reacting skeptically and nervously about any change to the national pension system. And the media assault on House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is beginning to pay off, in part because DeLay's undeniable tactical brilliance as a legislator is matched only by his advanced case of foot-in-mouth disease.

Meanwhile, the president's daring nomination of John Bolton as U.N. ambassador is in danger not because of media bias but because three Republican senators are evidently afraid of voting for someone who is accused (probably falsely) of being mean to his underlings. The only possible positive consequence of this preposterous objection is that it might force our U.S. senators — many of whom are absolutely monstrous bosses — to be a little nicer to their suffering staff members.

Add to this a 1,000-point decline in the stock market occasioned in part by rising oil prices and fears of inflation, and you might say that this is the spring of Republican discontent.

1. DeLay is not "brilliant"
He is just so immoral he was willing to stoop lower than anyone else would or ever has.

5. hahaha .. "Meanwhile, the president's daring nomination" hahahaha
John Podhoretz, bite me you loser neocon! What a great post from The Post. The Neocons are starting to notice that Nero is fiddling while we burn down our country. Too bad Nero was crowned by the CM (corporate media).

In a random note, I've always wondered about the financial viability of the Murdoch empire. Anybody know? Wouldn't it be just too much of Faux was an Enron?

9. I heard recently that the Murdoch empire is over-leveraged w/ high debt
and in fact, the comment even gave a snide undergirding liking it to Enron ... (I heard it on TV; sorry, I don't remember the show exactly, but I think it was on Olbermann or the Financial News) ... my ears shot straight up on THAT one ... it also mentioned that his son has zip, nada interest or skill to continue the dogshit business of his father.

7. He's right about one thing
"Politicians tend not to be brave". Unfortunately there's too much of that on our side of the aisle as well.

14. To quote another article....
that was over in the Editorials forum: "The GOP is a party out of control,
overdosing on the intoxicating fumes of its own arrogance."

Indeed.

16. they overreached
Hubris preceded the plunge...

and now they are in scramble mode -- hence the bible waving with fuzzy rhetoric designed to further divide and conquer the country

none of this has to do with religion or doing what's right for us all - it has to do with power and control

the repug intervention with Terri Shaivo was planned to further bolster their power -- but it backfired. So now they are stretching the "issue" to include "they hates our religion" rhetoric and further divide up the country

17. Elephants Panic
On the news the other night... saw some zoo elephants crashing thru a glass front of a building somewhere.... amazing, they tore the crap out of the building.

Talking head said that the zookeeper lost control....duh!

Fitting commentary for this thread, too, eh? Seems the handlers of our political elephants have lost their grip. Seems the worst of our political elephants are getting out of control. Time to put them suckers behind bars again?
