But Republicans did not persuade some of their closest allies.

On Thursday afternoon, Dr. Frist convened a meeting with top officials of major business groups, including the United States Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers, to enlist their support for the fight, officials of the groups said.

But the business groups pointedly declined to back him, these officials said, in part because in response Democrats have threatened to tie the Senate in knots that would block the group's legislative priorities like the energy bill and tort reform. The next morning, Tom Donohue, president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, told a gathering of journalists that the group had no interest in supporting the fight over the confirmation rules.

Nothing short of a real nuclear war will stop the bastards. They have painted themselves into a corner now and they have to follow suit. In the end WE will be the bad guys for shutting down the government.

2. Pay attention to this closely:
A major funding arm of the repukes is telling them that they are going too far and it is bad for business. This is not good news for them. Now, that does not meant that they are running away from them, but it does tell them, and us, that they have the sneakers out and are thinking of lacing them up.

4. But which are they most afraid of - losing the $$$ or having the ...
pitchforks turned loose on them by the hysterical fundie mob they've managed to crank up into a fevered pitch? This is gettin' real interesting to watch ... they haven't learned that wise old saying 'Be careful what you wish for ... you just might get it!'

6. Yep, the rubber's hitting the road. I'm betting they'll go
with the money. Even the most delusional rethugs must know the hardcore fundies are a minority. Sure, they need fundie votes, but they LOVE the money!

3. I think the repukes have become power drunk.
It's like they have been given too much power and they just keep getting more extreme and more extreme. Examples are everywhere. Delay, judge bashing (even though the Supremes selected brush), turning the media into a propaganda tool, war, torture....It will get a lot worse before it gets better.

5. No vote necessary -- it takes two people to doom the filibuster
One is a senator who raises a point of order that any more debate is "dilatory", and then Uncle Dick sustains it. That's all there is to it.

Without a Senate majority, the only weapon we have left is to tie the Senate in knots. And that is what will happen.

Buckle your seat belts.

7. also if they pulled the trigger on the nuclear option
wouldn't that end ANY democratic help on these votes? Usually there's a couple that vote with them and I think that would really dry up if not end completely.
