What do the other 1/4 do? Also, I get that CNN is clueless.

that the Catholics in the U.S. do not obey the Pope's alleged authority as 'the vicar of Christ on earth.'
This percentage is the same one quoted in an online poll (maybe sponsored by CNN as well).
I remember one of the late Robert Kennedy's sons, probably Joe, the ex-congressman, once saying he was a 'cafeteria Catholic.' I thought his candor was refreshing, but he caught hell for it from conservative Catholics and other fundies of various stripes. It was a very impolitic statement. Once I heard him say that, I knew he wasn't nearly as savvy as his father and the days of his political career were numbered.
The doctrinaire Catholics and all other 'traditional values' church types have so lost the 'culture war' that what we are seeing is a backlash at the polls. That's the only place they are winning. But they've got to get rid of the only 'unelected' branch, because the judiciary still governs in many cases with a sense of research and scholarship (stare decisis and all that) and not by way of whatever the howling mob might be demanding at any given moment.
The unwashed masses (if their votes are being counted honestly) also lament the loss of innocence and all that. So they vote Repuke as a sort of bow to nostalgia and the 'good ol' days' back when queers were in the closet and abortion was a crime in many states.
Also, you see the reaction at the FCC. The fines will not bring back 'decency' whatever that may be. But it is way vicariously to hit those godless profane and scatological heathen on TV and radio where it hurts them--in the pocketbook. But, as we know, three-fourths of the Catholics (or name any other denomination) are probably watching the very same shows being fined with no moral compunctions whatsoever.
