CNN: U.S. confirms Zarqawi near-capture. Hey, "almost" counts...right?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. troops in Iraq very nearly captured the country's most-wanted terrorist -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- earlier this year, U.S. officials have confirmed. The incident took place February 20 near Ramadi, west of Fallujah, when U.S. troops were tipped off that al-Zarqawi might be in the area.

At one point, they chased down a suspicious vehicle and later determined that the Jordanian-born insurgent leader had been in it but had escaped.

Two sources confirmed to CNN that a trusted lieutenant of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was seized from the vehicle, as was a computer containing what the sources called "a treasure trove of information" -- including direct connections to bin Laden.

The sources said it's a significant find -- a clear indication that al-Zarqawi and bin Laden are in two-way communications and that bin Laden couriers are able to get into Iraq.
