Bob Ney, the Republican from Ohio of "Freedom Fries" fame...
Background rom a posting by jesselee at DailyKos:Rep. Bob Ney (OH-18) - perhaps the most powerful, most ethically-troubled Republican you've never heard of.
As Chairman of the important House Administration Committee, Ney oversees operations of the Capitol, and is often referred to as the "Mayor of Capitol Hill." Now most of you will know by now of Jack Abramoff, aka Casino Jack, aka "Director of Travel for DeLay, Inc" - an individual we over at the Stakeholder have been obsessing over for months and months. Well, if there is one person deeper in the weeds on this than Tom DeLay it is Mr. Ney. As this Washington Post editorial detailed meticulously, one of the key Indian tribes involved was Ney's "biggest contributor that election cycle," with donations from the wheelings and dealings totalling nearly $50,000 - to say nothing of skyboxes, etc. This was the quid to that quo:
According to e-mails uncovered by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Mr. Abramoff enlisted Mr. Ney in the Tigua cause in March 2002. Mr. Ney was the lead House sponsor of a pending election reform bill, and the plan was to slip a casino-reopening provision into that unrelated measure. "Just met with Ney!!! We're f'ing gold!!!! He's going to do Tigua," Mr. Abramoff e-mailed Mr. Scanlon on March 20. Six days later Mr. Abramoff told the tribe it needed to come up with contributions for the congressman.
Ah, but if this were simply a case of quid pro quo with non-family values clients, that would make Ney nothing more than, well, a Republican. But no, it was much worse than that. You see, in order to slip the provision into law, it needed a Senate sponsor as well. So Abramoff and Ney told everybody, including the tribal clients, that they had Senator Dodd on board and everything was gravy. The money continued to pour in, and Abramoff, Scanlon and Congressman Ney hopped off to golf in Scotland on the tribe's bankroll. But Dodd was not on board, and they all knew it.
