Walmart's personal response to me regarding emergency contraception |
|
I signed a mass email to Walmart urging them to sell contraceptives. Here is their reply followed by my second reply. AND their email is right on the top in case anyone feels so inclined to write also.
help@walmart.com
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting us at Walmart.com regarding women?s prescriptions for birth control. Your comments and concerns are very important to us as we strive to meet your needs.
Wal-Mart does not carry emergency contraceptives. Our pharmacists may decline to fill a prescription based on personal convictions. However, they must find another pharmacist, either at Wal-Mart or another pharmacy, who can assist you by filling your prescription.
Again, we thank you for your comments regarding this issue.
Sincerely,
Customer Service at Walmart.com

Dear customer service:
What is you stance on selling guns and ammunition? Do you give the same personal discretion to sales associates who are truly concerned about the mortalities caused by guns? Or is this option only allowed for the pharmacists? If not can you please explain why?
And can you explain why you do not carry emergency contraceptives? Thank you.

several hundred associates employed at any given Walmart. There are usually only a handful of pharmacists though, and usually there is only one per shift. If an employee cites personal reasons as to why he can't sell a gun, I'm sure there is at least one person in that store who would be willing to do so. The customer at the pharmacy doesn't have the luxury of choosing another pharmacist if the only one on duty refuses to fill the prescription.

3. Go to a different Pharmacy |
|
There is always that option. I work in a pharmacy and we had this discussion the other day. The owner, a pharmacist basically said he would fill what perscriptions he wanted to. It was his business, if he lost business, so be it. But he would not be mandated to fill a script. Now, emergency contreception is not the only thing in question. Routinly, pharmacists refuse to fill perscriptions. It is not somthing that all of a sudden started happening. FYI that there are some catholic hospitals that do not stock BCP's in thier pharmacy for staff.
There is never be a law that says a pharmacit MUST fill ever prescription presented.

4. What happens when WalMart is the only pharmacy in town? |
|

There isn't always another option here in the rural areas.
This seriously is one of the most maddening things I've ever witnessed!

5. I try not to shop in that store but it is easy as it has a lot of stuff. |
|
I usually go to Wal-marts about twice a year.It is really hard to buy anything but from these large chains. We used to have two small shoe stores in town but they are gone now after Wal-mart came to town. I go to the next town to a cut rate shoe store that has been in business for 30 years. But tell me where can one buy say a DVD but at a chain. I can still go to a local store that has been in business for years to buy TV's and washers. It is getting hard to shop. Drugs? I do not use them so so far no problem.

7. It's been 5 years at least since I've been to a WalMart |
|
I refuse to set foot in one let alone spend money there.
I'm able to drive past them to shop elsewhere - at least an hour's drive - but I worry about women who don't have that option. Especially with this issue of pharmacists (and corporations) playing god with women's lives.

in rural Kansas. While one town may not have a pharmacy, I guarentee that there will be at least 3 within 50 miles. And if you live that far away your doc is there too. And if you are in a town big enough to support a wal-mart, there is more than one phmarmacy in that town.

6. The solution is don't buy at Wal-Mart |
|
I don't support any company that treats it's employees like Wal-Mart does. I won't set foot in any Sam's or Wal-Mart.
