Robert Reich's "Reason"
Edited on Mon May-09-05 10:15 AM by ProgressiveDepot.com
It's not that new anymore, but I highly recommemd Robert Reich's book "Reason" The subtitle is something like "Why Liberals Will Win Back America".

If you ever feel like you know Repub arguments are wrong, but you have trouble articulating your views when someone's in your face, this book does a great job of not just laying out facts but also the emotional/psychological issues that come into play and what the rational arguments against GOP lies are.

1. Sounds like Just the Book I Need.
I've given up discussing politics with a Repub friend of mine, 'cause he does get in my face and he's a better 'arguer' (I won't say debater, 'cause he falls into logical fallacies time and again) than I am, and I'm the one who gets emotional. I'm far better articulating my points in writing than in a 'debate'.

Buy it from Barnes & Noble
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=lU2D9yQBGg&isbn=1400076609&itm=3

I'm also purchasing The Art of Deception by Kevin Mitnick
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=lU2D9yQBGg&isbn=076454280X&itm=1

Barnes & Noble
Rating: Dark Blue - 100 %
BuyBlue.org's Position:

Barnes & Noble currently has a 100% BuyBlue rating due to political contributions for the 2003-2004 election cycle. Barnes & Noble executives contributed heavily and exclusively Democratic in the past election contribution over $78K in total. Barnes & Noble does not have a political action committee.

Do NOT buy from Amazon.com
Amazon.com, Inc.
Rating: Light Red - 41 %

BuyBlue.org's Position:

Amazon.com currently has a 41% BuyBlue rating due to political contributions for the 2003-2004 election cycle. The Amazon.com executives made few contributions to politicians during the 2003-2004 election cycle, but they donated significant money to Amazon's PAC. All political contributions to individual politicians were made to local Washington state politicians. Amazon's PAC sponsored politicians that act counter to the interests of their customers.

This PAC supported politicians that amongst other things supported "safeguards" regulating TV news content, opposed the "freedom to read" amendment allowing federal funds to be used to demand patron records from bookstores and libraries, and sponsored a bill to legalize "censorship software" for stripping "offensive content" out of films.

4. I'm only about halfway through
but I really like this book.

I find especially useful his argument that radical conservatives care about private morality only (sex, abortion, etc.). But liberals care about public morality instead - corruption, corporate greed, tax bilking, etc. - stuff that hurts society as a whole and is much more damaging. Putting the "moral" spin on it has already managed to stop some of my religious conservative relatives pretty much cold.

But then I hate letting they hypocrits have the moral high ground!
