I just dread it when Reinquist resigns the court
I heard somewhere that if we can't keep the fillibuster, we've got Justice Thomas, and there ain't nothin' we can do about it. Bush favors him because the Republicans can peel off even more black votes in the future.

I don't have a lot of hope in retaining the fillibuster. In the end, the Republicans will stick together and the Democrats don't have the stomach to fight.

1. Me too!
As much as I despise Reinquist, I really hope he hangs in there for the next four years. It's doubtful, but it could happen. I agree--I don't want to see B*sh and the Republican Congress appoint Thomas to replace him as chief justice for political gain among the African-American voters. Also, if the filibuster is removed, imagine what kind of conservative new judge will be appointed for life to the Supreme Court!!! It's a decision that could affect our country for generations! It truly frightens me to think what could happen. :scared:

4. So we should let them fight for the spot....
and then maybe they both can be "eliminated" from that competition. Wish they would just give it to Kennedy; he may be right leaning, but at least, he's reasonable. One can only wish...

7. wow, glad to hear
I'm not the only one who would pick Kennedy.

I mean, it's not like they're going to pick somebody who leans left of right.

But of all the right leaners, I at least find Kennedy logical.

5. I was thinking about that too
Scalia's ego is massive. It is hard to imagine him lying down for this one...He threatened to quit if Gore won, because he'd never be the Chief Justice.

3. When is the end of the SCOTUS term?

It is widely believed that he will retire after this session finishes.

9. Many of us were shouting this from the rooftops pre-election, to little
avail, right here on DU.

Once they get their claws into the SCOTUS, they win, simple as that.

And THEY talk about activist judges?

Let's all pray for the health of Justice Rehnquist--as hard as that may be for some of us. He's all we got now.

11. But it won't change the court's stance on many issues.
Since Rehnquist is a repuke, and they'll get another repuke to replace him. It would be a whole different story if it were a moderate justice who was sick.

12. THAT's my big fear.
Stevens dropping dead tomorrow would make me a basketcase. He's 85 years old now. His health ain't too great. And (I can't remember where I read this) his wife wants him to step-down.

If John Paul Stevens can hold-on for another four years, so too can I.

But man.. if JPS falls.. ouch..

13. Who cares..One neocon replaces another neocon
It won't change the balance of power. He only has one vote like the rest....but when O'Conner or Stevens retire that's a whole nothing story
