Our country was founded on the ideal that all citizens are equal. But we all know that equality is something we're still striving to achieve.
When one of our fellow Coloradans can be fired simply because of her sexual orientation, she is denied equality. That's certainly wrong. But, shamefully, it is currently legal.
Federal law does not not prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and only 16 states have such a prohibition. Governor Owens has on his desk legislation passed by the House and Senate - SB 05-028 - that would make Colorado the 17th state to extend our employment non-discrimination law to cover sexual orientation. The bill would also extend protection from discrimination on the basis of disability or gender identity.
Governor Owens should sign SB 05-028 into law today because it's the right thing to do. Unfortunately, the Governor has said that he may veto this bill; that could happen at any time.
Please take a moment and add your name to this open letter urging Governor Owens to protect all Colorado families and sign SB 05-028:
