Anyone beside me like Harry Reid in '08?
Edited on Fri May-13-05 02:19 PM by smoogatz
Just curious. I know he's pro-life at heart, but at the same time he's leading a ballsy fight against Bush's wingnut judges--which indicates to me that his head's in the right place. He's smart, he's honest, he's a westerner, and he's not a DLC corporate whore/capitulator. What do you think, DU?

1. I like Harry Reid
but where he is not for President. The pres has to be pro choice, there's just too much in the way of appointments that we need to have someone who is pro choice in office.

5. I couldn't back Kerry again.
His position on Iraq was/is way too contorted. I still don't understand it, frankly.

3. I think one of the reason Reid is able to put up this strong a fight...
...is cuz he doesn't have the Oval Office in his sights. I'd like it if he kept it that way :hi:

But Why The Fuck is every Democrat who does any work for the Party being floated as a Presidential candidate???

Damn it, I'm sick of this Flavor Of The Week game. If you haven't caught on, 40% of DU will jump onto any such thing...and jump right off it when the next emotional bandwagon comes along.

I want an After November '06 Rule. No goddamn blathering or hankering about a candidate until the day after the midterm election in GD:P.

6. Human nature
We're all living in some degree of anticipation, I think. Why not try on the various suits, if they're hanging in the closet?

9. Okay, it was a bit harsh...

but I'm not actually beating on you or the person posting this, just that there's no escaping the hordes in GD and GD:P who want to plan for and to some extent live in 2008 already.

Think of me as raising my eyes and hands to the heavens. Of course I understand the impulse. Reality is harsh at the moment, Democrats are all over the place politically and personally, and adulating people who do good or right despite the confusion is really important. But why can't anyone come up with something more original that "I like X, let's fantasize happily about X as President'?

10. Fair enough,
I'm in agreement that it's too early, but speculation about it is going to happen no matter what.

My irony meter may be cranked up higher than most, but I find this an incredibly funny thing to say.

11. I think it is simple..
.... nobody is satisfied with the crop of "contenders" and they're searching for a REAL LEADER.

13. I don't.
It's not that I don't like Reid; I just think he can better serve the US in his current job than he could as President, especially if the Dems manage to reclaim the Senate in '06.

14. Come to Think of It, Reid Might be a Winner
All the current front-runners have problems. Reid might just be the ticket. Candidate speculation doesn't bother me. I think there's a sense of dissatisfaction with the current candidates and people are searching for a more successful model. (Personally, I suspect the winner will be "None of the Above", someone who's not high on anyone's list right now.)

I love Al Gore, but after what the press did to him in 2000, I think his public reputation may be poisoned. Same with Howard Dean. Kerry already a loss behind him. Hillary Clinton is at the same time too conservative for progressives and too liberal for conservatives (my personal opinion is that she would not win). Edwards is probably the best candidate, but he has the trial lawyer and boyish countenance going against him.

Reid is actually the perfect 2008 candidate in certain ways. He is from a red state, does not conform to liberal stereotypes, does not push religious hot buttons, has the courage of his convictions, and is a tough political fighter. I can see him winning over a ton of swing voters.

I generally prefer governors, but that's not an ironclad rule. Although didn't Reid support the bankruptcy bill? That's a major negative.

15. Not to sound like an ass, but it'll be tough because he's LDS.
You think Catholics have a hell of a time winning a national election, just imagine a Mormon!

I just don't see it happening.

16. I do like Reid and would have no problem supporting him...
for Prez (even though he's anti-abortion), however, I don't think he has the, for lack of a better term, "star appeal" that a lot of people are looking for in a president. I think Reid serves the party much better right where he's at.

18. Well, it's hard to out-religion a Mormon, so that would be a plus --
and, come to think of it, he would be a great "our-long-national-nightmare-is-over" guy, a healer.

19. Could we please stop talking about 2008?
You guys got your wish. Hindsight is 20/20. We have a criminal-in-chief to fight. Worry about 2006. At the rate that * is going, whomever wins the nomination (and hopefully the presidency) is going to have a massive, I mean MASSIVE mess to clean up once * leaves office. I am going to keep saying this regardless of who runs.
