FACE THE NATION - Bob Schieffer just said NEWSWEEK Koran story false... |
|
As part of his closing statements today (praising Mrs. Bush's honesty) Schieffer referred to the "...Newsweek Koran allegations which turned out to be false..."
:wtf:

2. Well, technically speaking ... |
|
Edited on Sun May-22-05 12:09 PM by x_y_no
The specific part which claimed that official confirmation of the Koran flushing incident is in the SouthCom report was false.
That kind of begs the point of the whole thing, though. :-/

6. UNtechnically speaking .... |
|
The stories about desecration of the Quran and insults against Islam by american personnel are QUITE true, and have been reported elsewhere by numerous sources ....
So: Qurans WERE desecrated, as a matter of course, by official agents acting on behalf of the United States of America, and it's military and intelligence organs ....
Technicalities cannot wipe that stain away ....

16. Following that logic. |

One would have to say the same thing about the Bush admin, as well as the whole FOX network.

3. I've read there were reports |
|
from the Red Cross much earlier about The Koran being desecreted..so where does bob get off categorically denouncing newsweek's story as false?
And what's up with mrs bush's honesty..what has she said that hasn't been a big fat propoganda lie?
Is schieffer a tool or what?

5. IMO, I believe these are acts of treason! |
|
I think that we should hold the media accountable for their BS and if it takes pinning the "treasonous acts" label on their lapels...then so be it!
Peace.

10. I'm sure not defending this Admin, but the other reports of |
|
abusing the Quran were all based upon former detainees who were finally released and back in their home contries when they said those things. This Newsweek article would have been the FIRST link to proof that the US Military knew aobut it and was admitting to it.
The Admin has been claiming all along that you can't believe these former detainees. Now, I don't think I'd necessarily believe it if it was only one, but I understand there ere MANY who reported these abuses.
It's just a damn shame whoever the unconfirmed source didn't back his claims made it Issakof.

13. I believe the detainees too, especially since there were many |
|
who confirmed this story. My point was that what got Newsweek into real trouble wasn't really the story as much as it would have been the first PROOF that the us Military KNEW what was going on. This PROOF would have put an end to this BS that you can't believe detainees.
Unfortunately, I'm sure when this Souther Comand Report is published, none of the quran info is going to be in it, even if it was in another edition of that same report brior to this Newsweek episode.

I don't think all these guys have ideological epiphanies. I think they get really heavy pressure. I hope someday it's revealed what kind of pressure and where from. It's so sad.

19. The Newsweek story was not retracted because it was false |
|
It was retracted because their Pentagon source backpedaled on their statement. How many times have we seen a person come out with a statement that criticized this Administration or their policies, only to have them issue a retraction soon after? Most likely the story was true, but the source was pressured to change their story. That is the way that this administration operates. Newsweek probably did the responsible thing when their source disavowed their original statement, but they have really dropped the ball in allowing the media to spin this as if the story had been disproved, instead of merely being unverified.

9. "Technically speaking" |
|
"False" and "unverifiable" are not the same.
The Newsweek source now says he/she cant confirm the info is in THE report he/she says is soon to be published. (but that they may have read it in other material)
Remember General Miller was sent from Gitmo to Abu Ghraib to "tell them how to get things done with detainees"
...ask yourself the question "if we can sexually-assault/rape , torture , murder....how hard is it to believe HumanRightsWatch and Int. Committe of RedCross that desecrating the Qur'an has happened repeatedly"

15. Same crap with the Rather stuff |
|
there is a HUGE difference between "not proved" and "false".
Why do "journalists", who one would think have a basic grasp of language, insist on confusing the two?

17. The difference from the Rather story |
|
is that Issakoff/Newsweek KNOW who the heretofore anonymous source is. That person must be exposed. That person holds personal, direct responsibility for the content of the Periscope piece, in conjunction with the 2 Pentagon officials who knew the story was to be printed but declined to dispute it or ask for a hold while they investigate. Anonymous sources lose their privilege of anonymity when they make late retractions, IMHO.

23. It's not just Schieffer. Per NBC news not only was the Newsweek story |
|
"erroneous," the story caused violence and unrest. It's stated as a proven fact. (Despite previous military assessments that the story did not cause the unrest.)
The news media are so slack, lazy, afraid that claims that have not been proven are repeated as accepted "fact." They're just megaphones for the Administration. Given this "quality" of news is it any wonder that people who rely on these outlets don't have much of a clue? Doesn't take much skill to write copy or read it on the air when the story's just taken from the Administration's press statements and talking points.

|
...when he doesn't prove to be a proven right-wing whore...which tends to be his usual role...never a hard-hitting fellow...take the easy road kinda sellout twerp.
Sometimes I think the Beltway Blowhard Press is so sucked into itself, it never bothers to worry about the truth...or its own legacy.
