Two repubs in my speech class and both caught lying............
One girl was a 19 year old. She claimed in her speech that "We went down to this park full of homeless people and talked to them, "everyone we talked to said they liked being homeless, every single one of them" (Blame the victim). I called her on it as I worked occasionally with a group that served food to the homeless there and asked why anybody would claim they enjoy sleeping in the freezing rain hungry and broke every night? I also pointed out that most homeless teens are fleeing some sort of abuse at home (rape, physical abuse) and not there for "Fun". She got upset and started yelling that I was a 'librul' and left half crying. Her claims were pure Limbaugh rant. Another student did a speech about "purity" (abstainance). She claims that she had sex with a boyfriend once (while playing "house" at age 21) and that she later found out that he had AIDS and how upset she was when she found out blah blah and thank God she didn't catch it. I talked to her about it after class and she admitted she made up the story to 'scare' the girls in class into abstainance. She is extreme rapture right type. Apparently in GOP land its standard operating proceedure to openly lie about everything particularily when trying to 'convince' people. Can't influence people? Just lie!!!

1. Why am I not surprised?
In recent years, one of the Republicanites' favorite strategies has been: 1) Figure out what nasty, mean-spirited opinion you hold on a certain topic, 2) Find facts to support your opinion and ignore those that don't, 3) If there aren't any facts to support your opinion, lie.

2. Cought One The Other Day
claiming that the dems are more in Enron's pocket than the GOP. I sent the snopes.com link for this bit of AM radio propaganda and didn't even get a 'never mind' back.

The rule seems to be lie until you're caught. And if your the President, you don't even stop then.

13. They lie even after they are caught
It amazes me how often these people keep repeating the same lie even after they are caught in it. They think it has validity if you keep repeating it.

3. No one called the second girl out
in class? Well maybe she was smart enough to use protection but hey why teach people how to protect themselves when we can indoctrinate them with our beliefs and hope they follow them?

10. She says shes against 'protection'
I also pointed out to her that girls who sign abstainance onlyy pledges have a higher rate of STDs and pregnancy because they are clueless as to how to avoid them when they urge overpowers them and they hop in the sack in the heat of the moment.

4. For Repugs the ends justify the means.
This is especially so when honesty gets in the way. This is common weasel behavior.

6. Lack intellectual merit, lie!
What a shame, it must be a trip to be both intellectually challenged and morally bankrupt.

11. Lying weakens any arguments that people could make
for abstinance. Personally, when I subbed in high school, I told the boys in the sex ed class that they could decide what they wanted to do, but they should be aware of the risks involved-and I didn't just mean STDs. I talked about emotional entanglements that could happen. I talked about whether it was important to them that the woman they married be virgins. If it was, they should keep that in mind when they got involved with a girl. I quite truthfully told them how my husband felt my chastity was a great gift that I brought to him, but again stressed that for some, this isn't important, and if it wasn't, then they shouldn't feel guilty about it. I guess what I did, basically, was try and get the boys to examine their own values and act upon them. I was lucky to get away with it, but I did.

As for the girl and homeless people-wouldn't it be interesting if you took her to meet some of the homeless ones? She might be surprised to find out that these are people too.

12. They Call it Lying for Jesus
These people are sick. Lying is okay as long as they get the outcome that they believe Jesus wants.

14. Lakoff writes about how facts often don't matter to conservatives.
If you have so many resonating conservative models for seeing the world, when the facts undermine any one belief, it doesn't really matter...
