Ominous News About the Draft from Florida

http://www.pensitoreview.com/2005/06/06/ominous-news-about-the-draft-from-florida/

Why is Washington making sure Florida’s draft board is at capacity?

The Gainesville Sun:

What the federal government is looking for are at least 78 Floridians willing to serve on draft boards even though the nation has not had a draft for 25 years.

“These local folks would decide cases that involve individuals who may be claiming a hardship, or that they are a conscientious objector, or ministerial student, or member of the clergy, or have some other reason why they believe they should not be drafted,” said Dick Flahavan, associate director of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Selective Service System.

Hmmm. Doesn’t sound good. And, the government wants you to know, you’ll need to available for extra hours in the remote chance the draft is re-enacted. Remote. Right.

The time commitment is minimal during peacetime, Flahavan said…However, the time commitment could increase significantly during a draft.

Have no idea if the government is trying to make sure all draft boards are ship-shape but I’d be very interested to hear if the call is going out nationwide. Please make a comment if this is happening in your state.

1. They can't do it now. At least not straight out.

If the elections in 2006 aren't even close ...which they won't be, if the draft is on the table...they won't be able to steal it and the Dems will take back the House >>> Bush will be impeached. They'd have to get the dems to go along with it. Are the dems that stupid?

3. There will never be a draft
As I have said numerous times on numerous thread, there will never be a draft for the following reasons:

1) The White House doesn't want it.
2) Congress doesn't want it.
3) The Pentagon doesn't want it.

There will never be a Vietnam style draft again. Never. Period end of story.

5. I don't actually disagree with you
But it stills begs the question. Why are they going to such pains to restaff the draft boards then?

19. Inertia
The law requires that the nation be ready to re-introduce the draft with minimal delay. The fact that a draft is a political impossibility is irrelevant--the current law requires that draft boards be staffed and so efforts will be made to make sure that happens. There is nothing new here. Draft boards have been staffed since before WWII, and will continue to be staffed until Congress changes the law.

6. With Downing Street Memo out WHAT WARPED WORLD DO YOU LIVE IN?
THIS WHITE HOUSE CANNOT HAVE A DRAFT.

If either the RepubliCANTS start a draft or the Democrats (and they WILL NOT STAND FOR DRAFT) both would LOSE EVERY ELECTION FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS!!!!!

Please don't post things that are not realistic and SCARE PEOPLE. That's what the White House wants...for everyone to be MORTIFIED.

We see through them and the IMPEACHEMNT is on the way!!!! We have so much evidence it's not even funny!!

8. It would be politicial suicide for them
I agree. If they come out with a draft they will lose seats in the House and Senate. So they can't do it. So what are they going to do? And you and I know that Bush isn't going to leave Iraq anytime soon until they have the oil up soon.

10. Nothing at all unusual about it...
as I have posted many times before, draft board members have term limits, and every board in the country is being restaffed because members are required to step down.

Draft or not, the boards still need to have members. Some boards may have problems recruiting members because it is a volunteer thing, after all, and there may not be much interest in it in some areas. And, not much to do but busy work when there's no draft.

Just so everyone knows, pacifists and anti-militarists can join the boards (better that they don't make a big thing about their beliefs, though) and there have been a number of them joining simply so they can help expedite CO claims if we do have a draft.

11. Simple, really
Before the '06 mid-term elections, the criminal enterprise that commandeered our nation, knowing that they will lose control of congress and impeachment proceedings will soon commence, will fabricate a national emergency declaring imminent terrorist attack, postponing elections, and declaring martial law. This will be the death-rattle of our Republic as the neo-cons and the religious nut-cases will not relinquish power. In order to staff the army with enough soldiers to die for God and oil, the draft will be re-instated for everyone (except those who have money, family connections, are rich and white, Bar and Jenna, etc.). It is better if the mechanism is fully staffed and ready to go right now as they will need a lot of soldiers to quell the civil disobedience that will ensue.

13. Ikonoklast
We've already figured out that they fabricate emergencies so we'll be able to call them on it. I don't think that's going to happen...I'm sure they've been told that they are not to start any more attacks, issues etc. They're in so much trouble and everything is crumbling on them that they won't be able to. It seems like very single day, there's a new scandal and the evidence just keeps piling up on them.

i do think in some way this cabal will manufacture another national emergency with the specific aim of getting people back on board - for war/the overall far right republican agenda of continuing to shut off our rights and our voice

its unlikely there will be a straight out draft but there is something related brewing. they have done far far too much to circumvent truth and the constitution to let it go. this group is willing to go to any lengths to manipulate and keep control that nothing can be dismissed as possible
there is clearly some reason draft boards are doing this. there is some reason that it is taking place in florida! i think its partially so when this emergency occurs then they are at the ready in case people bring forward resistance. then the boards have been prepared to deny someones request to not serve.
they pretty much start everything in florida. so when it starts there then you know somethings going on with national implications

at some point they will go so far that even the corporate media and the sheeple will resist. but if its big enough - or they lay enough of the groundwork to place the blame elsewhere as usual - then i expect basically the same response as post 9/11.
they will continue to shout national security or patriotism or fight them there so we dont fight them here or God is on our side (which is so not true) and the media reports it as strong leadership and democracy.

so lets keep fighting the good fight. everyone sign john conyers petition?

12. Everyone who can, SHOULD try to get on a draft board
these are the people who will or won't allow people who conscientiously object to do so. It is important that they not be filled with right-wing hate mongers who have disdain for people who cannot kill because Uncle Sam says so.

15. The main problem, at least for me, is the selection process...
...disallows anyone that has any kind of criminal record. I believe that includes misdemeanors. I don't even know anyone that has never been convicted of a misdemeanor.

16. hi toebot - welcome. you must not have gotten the memo!
did you see the recent thread here about how the military has lowered their standards again in order to keep even more people retained in service

ill have to go find that thread - it was sunday i think - but it talked about an official notification that outlined all kinds of wonderful new low (vile) standards they have in order to keep you in

so no matter what the standards once were, rest assured that misdemeanors arent going to keep anyone out of service
there are now a whole bunch of things that wont keep people out

and did you know that if parents would get stop interfering with recruiters then we wouldnt need the draft
(sarcasm of course)

they can sit and knit. I don't think the draft is going to fly. There will be WWIII in this country first.

20. JOIN YOUR LOCAL DRAFT BOARD
"No, this kid can't join, he seems like he has a bright future"

"Sorry, this guy's mom loves him too much. He can't go to war"

"This one is too excited about killing Iraqi's. He has to stay."

"This young man is gay - he's not allowed, right?"

"so's this one....and this one....wait a minute! They all are! Sorry, in my whole town we don't have a damn person fit to be a soldier"
