The press built up Dean so he would take swipes at the presumptive nominee - kerry.
Once the danger was recognized (Dean = populist progressive appeal) they had to tear him down. All you heard about Dean after that point was how unelectable he was and how Kerry was the electable 'anti-dean' candidate.
The MSM motivation was to get the nominees to take shots at each other to erode Democratic party unity. And thats why they pushed Dean so much before he became dangerous.
Just my $.02

34. How it really went down. Really. |
|
Dean got media attention because he was drawing thousands of people to primary speeches. Those crowds were unprecedented and pretty hard to ignore.
Although Kerry was the presumed favorite at the beginning of the race, the media didn't pick him, the Party did. See Iowa, where the previously struggling Kerry rolls to victory (after an inside-the-beltway deal that had Kucinich/Edwards agreeing to swap delegates and Kerry/Gephardt doing the same- all to one end: Stop Howard Dean. Boom, the Party swings into fax overdrive and, voila, "Mr. Electable" rises from the ashes.
That's how it really went down.

There's a lot of completely irrational Hillary hating on these boards, and I don't understand it. I do agree the media is focusing on her, which may be a good thing. Despite what the RW hacks will puke out day after day on Fox News, Hillary is not the polarizing figure that they make her out to be- she did remarkably well in up state NY, for example, where traditionally Republicans dominate. She's got the name, she's certainly got the money and the ability to raise money, and she's got some serious ass kickin' skills. At this point, if she runs, I'm supportering her. I truly believe she can win.

13. i can teLL you why i don't Like her |
|
and i thought you wouLd at Least have caution (if not rage over this).
she's cozied up with too many homophobes for my tastes. she came to an award presentation/fund raiser here in boston (6 months ago?) where she cozied up with reverand eugene rivers.
the good reverand has done much good; he was instrumentaL in taking back the neighborhoods of boston during the height of the gang wars in the Late 80s and earLy 90s.
now, the man has Lost any respect i may have for him. for the past 1.5 or so years he has been pitting bLacks against gays. he's been getting face time for denouncing the 'gay LifestyLe' and their attempts to marry... but worse: he has demonized gays for daring to compare their struggLes to that of bLacks, and he has caLLed on his foLLowers to fight against gay marriage and gay rights. he cLaimed the onLy benefactors of gay marriage wouLd be, "rich, white Lesbians" and they don't need any 'extra heLp'. it baffLes me whenever i see one repressed group turn on another repressed group. is this some sick, seLf-esteem issue?
and these are hiLLary's new friends? how dare she? seriousLy, how fucking dare she?
i know some say, 'oh, you gotta get dirty and make bedmates with bad peeps, etc' and that aLL poLiticians do it. that is uncacceptabLe.

36. I feel my distaste for Senator Clinton is very rational. |
|
She too prone to leaning towards the right and "triangulation" on key policy issues. In particular, her stance on the occupation of Iraq is unacceptable. Of all the so-called moderates in the party she might be the best of the bunch, but I think we can do a lot better. Senator Feingold is a much better champion of progressive causes, and is equally "electable".
That said, I do appreciate how the mere utterance of the word "Hillary" makes many rightwingers' heads spin around like that girl in The Exorcist.

The rabid right is obsessed with her. There are three dozen threads a day at Freeperville on her alone. They even set up a section for Hillary threads. The rabid right is pushing this and if she runs, she should credit the rabid right for helping her campaign.

Listen, if we reanimated Reagan and nominated him the RW noise machine could find ways to push his negatives up among the RW base.
I'm not sold on Hillary but we can't let the RW choose our candidate.

The rabid right wants Hillary so the media pushes the story.
We need to find our own candidate and do everything we can to get that candidate elected but realizing the media will be pushing against that idea.

22. I think the test should be |
|
Not who does the RW want or not want it should be:
who is going to get the activist grass roots base energized
who is going to bring new people to the polls by virtue of not seeming like "politician as usual"
who will the average american connect with
It all comes down to people skills, likability, Clinton I had it in spades and I don't think Clinton II does.
I'm hoping for Dean 2.0. I have no doubt that Dean ran on a formula (progressive populist, likeable, plainspoke, even hotheaded)
I hope he mentors some unknown to run by that formula in 2008.
Our candidate has does not have to win over the right wing. He has to energize the base and motivate and inspire the 30% of people who didn't bother to vote last time that thier vote CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

9. I like Hillary a lot. I also don't think a female can win the White House. |
|
And that's a sad thing to say about our country, it really is. Would I vote for her? Of course I would, and I'd be glad to do it. But the right saw this coming years and years and years ago, and they've styled her amongst their own as a "crazy psycho lesbian feminazi". I think there are too many chauvenists and mysoginists in this nation for any woman, no matter how qualified and capable, to be elected President.
Then factor in that the Democratic candidate will need to win 60% of the vote to leap over the voting machine "errors". . . it just isn't going to happen. At LEAST not until we straighten out our voting machine problems. Which just isn't happening under Republican leadership. If we can fix THAT, and maybe start to stablize the nation, I will gladly campaign for her in 2016.

but not the time to start a presidential campaign...especially if it is going to be the first woman President. I say 2008 is good for me. Go for it!

10. So did they say what the DLC's name will be in 2008? |
|
Somehow, I think the landscape is going to move out from under the DLC. They are going to need a serious makeover to get separated from what will be their connection to a failing past.
The "me too" crowd had better practice dancing. It may take some fancy footwork to not look like collaborators and facilitators of todays policies that will be demanding change in a few years.

It's gonna be a hard sell.....notwithstanding that it's already Hillary.

24. I met some of Hillary's staff at a job fair yesterday... |
|
in DC. They were looking disapprovingly at my "Draft Clark" and self-designed "Clark '08" hat when I handed them my resume.
"You're a Clark supporter," one of them said. "I'm a Clarkie, but you don't have to hold it against me," said I. "He isn't going to run anyway, is he?" said another. "He certainly isn't running for the Senate from New York in 2006," I replied. This drew smiles and laughs from all three recruiters, and we had a nice diccussion after that.
It's way too early to talk about 2008. We NEED to focus on at least a net gain of two or three Senate seats, half a dozen House seats, and winning State House and Gubernatorial races across the country in 2006. Not to mention keeping right-wing zealots off school boards and boards of selectmen at the local level.
I am as eager to start campaigning for the White House as anyone, but if we don't get our priorities straight in time for the midterms, the 2008 election might well be irrelevant.

30. While I appreciate the sentiment... |

This is exactly what I am trying to avoid. We need to join together and elect as many Democrats as possible in 2006 and leave 2008 alone for now. I don't want Hillary scared of Clark supporters, I want her to be able to count on us for support next year. If they see fit to hire me for the campaign, I'll be in New York in a flash.
Campaigning for 2008 also plays into the criticism that Clark isn't a "real" Democrat and is only focused on winning the presidency. If we don't rebuild the party base in the meantime, we have zero chance of winning the White House in three years, no matter who our nominee is.
