Boycott Texas -- Gays not Welcome
Rick Perry, the godawful excuse for a governor in Texas, signed a bill proposing a homophobic constitutional amendment to ban civil unions for gay Texans. He chose to sign this bill at a Christian church, where he had this exchange with a reporter for a local news station:

Local NBC Anchor: "Among the protesters were gay veterans and their partners. We asked the governor about his take on gay veterans, many of whom may one day have fewer rights than everyone else."

Rick Perry: "Texans made a decision about marriage and if there's a state that has more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's a better place for them to live."

5. It's going to take a cultural change on top of regime change
It'll take decades of struggle to defeat the notion that it's okay to pass laws discriminating against homosexuals and making them second class citizens. The civil rights struggle still continues. It didn't end with the 1960s.

7. It's a dupe. I reposted when I tried to nominate the original for greatest
but I couldn't because it was more than 24 hours old so I reposted in this forum.

This is an act of supreme douchebaggery that needs greater exposure (I live in Texas and I never heard about this until I saw it here).

pissed on the Alamo. Which, frankly, isn't a bad commentary on Texas in general. I don't think it was deliberate--he was in a state not conducive to deliberate action of any kind--but it certainly made a statement.

Maybe we could start a protest march culminating with a mass pissing on the Alamo. Texas could get pissed on AND pissed off all at once.

Hmmm. On the other hand, maybe not.

31. Remember N.O.W.'s boycott of states that would not ratify ERA?
That went on for a long, long time. It did not change the outcome of the failed Constitutional amendment, but it did punish some very red states. On the other hand, it punished some big cities too, which tend toward blue. But Texas needs a whipping. They are way too up there on their high-horse.

34. As Lesbians, my partner and I find our US shrinking daily
We refuse to go to any state that has passed specific legislation limiting what arrangements gays and lesbians can make between themselves. I think there are about 12 now, but maybe more. We also work hard to not buy anything from companies based in those states, but it is hard to figure that out sometimes.

We certainly do not want to visit a state where, if one of us were injured or became sick, the other would be denied visitation rights or rights to make medical decisions for the other. Virginia is the most egregious of the states, but there are others as well, that have passed specific legislation prohibiting or limiting legal agreements between same-sex couples.

Thank the Goddess for California! (And a few other good states left in this union)

35. Texas will soon be in the middle of a mean Republican dog fight
over the gubernatorial nomination (Sick Rick Perry vs. Kay Brainless Hutchison).

Texas is also insanely pro-business/anti-consumer state. If we can ensure that Perry's outrageous comments function as a mistake with bad consequences for the travel and tourism business, it could have an effect.

I'm just sayin'

58. make huge gay parties all summer long. then blame perry.
men walking in daisy dukes and flannels knotted in the front. women playing softball all the time.

gay bible themed BBQs servin' "adam's rib" and "adam's apple" and "toss eve's 'fig leaf' salad," call the salt shaker "lot's wife" -- great for licking for tequila shots, no serving of shellfish because... well tee hee, let's not go there.

it'll all be perry's fault that he'll spawn a summer long gay 'infestation.' it'd be funny, at least.

ps: yes, you can buy your supplies at the border states and cart them on in if you want. and yes, you can buy stuff in mexico too.

40. I'm queer (bi), and I don't want to boycott.
Two reasons:

1) It's not all Texans doing this. I don't want to harm good Texans.

2) My mom is a Texan living in Florida. I have relatives and friends in Texas. They're the good people I don't want to harm.

Don't think this is an idea worth pursuing, personally.

60. I said this before...
Is Perry's statement that "Support the Troops" meme we have heard so much about? Aren't these the same troops that protect his right to free speech? Aren't these the same troops who are "spreading democracy?" So, is it that they can go to another country, spread democracy, and return home to fascism? The Rethugs confuse me so much!

Perry has "spit" on the troops and they haven't even come home...pass it along!
