Congressional Civil Disobedience.. |
|
Democrats demonstrated that they still have the ability to partake in a little civil disobedience when they feel it is necessary. When Republican Chairman Sensenbrenner called the meeting about the Patriot Act to a close - over the Democrats requesting a 'point of order'- the Democrats continued to question the witnesses for approximately ten minutes after all the Republicans had walked out. The Democrats demonstrated that they do not have to have the Republicans to hold hearings - they can hold hearings on their own if they desire. And they may have to do that if their voices continue to be stifled.

3. Sensenbrenner showed that the Repub do NOT allow true |

testimony. It was telling to see him storm out looking very out of control.

If not, would they have any legal authority? Good question.

7. More than that, though, |
|
do the Democrats have any legal authority to hold congressional hearings without the majority party's OK. I wouldn't think so.
And something else. Everything we do that changes the rules, it is now legitimate for the Republicans to do when we are back in power. Something to think about.

8. I think they have that authority. |
|
I recall they did it at least once when Clinton was President.

i'm no expert on Congressional rules but i can't imagine people in Congress are not supposed to speak once the Chair adjourns the meeting ...
whether the discussion becomes part of the Congressional record or not is a different matter but there is nothing that prevents any citizen from speaking on the issues or asking questions of others ...
and frankly, when Democrats are back in power, if republicans want to speak on the issues after the hearing ends, that's more than fine with me ...
what Conyers, Nadler and Lee did was heroic !!
