Street Fight (documentary) politics in America. |
|
Just saw this at the library, about the Mayoral race in Newark, New Jersey. Two African-American candidates, one an idealistic young contender, the other a treacherous long-term incumbent. The newbie loses, but not before the camera catches the incumbent in many outright lies (the challenger isn't really black, he's not a Democrat, he's really Jewish, etc.), the police taking down the challenger's campaign signs, and code enforcement threatening to shut down businesses if they put up a sign for the new guy, Cory Booker. Remember that name because he looks like a future John Conyers to me. He's going to run for Mayor again in 2006 and once folks get to know him, he can go anywhere.
The documentary was shown as part of a deal the library has with a Public Broadcasting series called Point of View. It is supposed to air in San Diego on July 10th (not sure what time). If you haven't seen it, try to get your local public TV to show it. Oh yeah, the incumbent's security tried to grab the film, so the cinematographer had to hire a separate film crew--if you filmed Booker, you couldn't also film them.
