Why have Saddam's trial now? height of insurgency means more
deaths and conflict. Why would they do this now?

1. Some here speculate they'll wait till '06 senate elections..
Although.. I guess that's assuming the trial is going to have some overwhelming effect on John Q. America's emotions.. :shrug:

2. The Shia masses have a lot of anger pent up right now....

with the bombings, etc. The current Iraqi leadership thinks that maybe some of that anger can be blown off by bringing out the guillotine and executing the old king.

3. It won't start for another two months.
Saddam says that he is still the Pres. I agree that he is because he has not been convicted of any crimes and the U.S. Invasion was illegal.

Nothing new here.

(I assume we will only hear limited portions of this trial as much of it will be quite sticky for US politicos, particularly repugs)

5. A show trial and Kangaroo Court
Everyone, even most on DU, are sure that he is guilty. I am no Saddam fan but this trial will be a real farce.
