It may have been "common knowledge" that Plame was a spook to Beltway insiders (although I doubt that), but on that day it became absolutely, positively widespread and public knowledge.

I went looking, and found this story that said Fitzgerald had been named as the prosecutor. It's dated 12-30-2003, so probably they didn't get the grand jury thing up and running until early 2004.
