What does your avatar image mean to you?
I know it is off topic and a little nerdy but I think it would be a good discussion to take our minds off the whole rovegate and now the roberts thing for a bit.

I choose LBJ simply because of my respect for his great society program and also after visiting his ranch in Texas his immense appreciation for nature.

I don't think I remember hearing your mother had passed. My mother passed a few years ago, I know how hard it is. There's just something comforting about having your mom there, no matter how old you get. It's hard to adjust to life without her, not to mention all the special mommy things they do that you don't realize you'll miss. What a lovely tribute for her, really nice.

12. I picked Chimpy picking his nose because...
....it is quite simply surreal. If you don't know, the picture of Chimpy mining for booger nuggets is actually a vid-cap, taken years ago at a Texas Rangers game. He was sitting in the stands...had to have at least some inkling, had to, that as the Rangers owner/co-owner/whatever AND as a son of George H.W. Bush he just might get his mug on camera. Didn't matter, and when the camera catches him 'pleasuring himself', man he really went at it, did a very thorough job. Quite disgusting. If there is a more embarrassing photograph or video of a former President, I haven't seen it. Oh, wait....his dad, sitting on the floor at that Japanese state dinner...with puke all over himself!!!!:puke: :puke: :puke:

17. The Constitution
It provides me with a little rudder direction every time I see it. I spent 24 years supporting and defending it and I will until they pry my cold dead hands off my hardbound Barnes and Noble copy of the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Incredibly brilliant liberal douments. I believe with every ounce of fiber in my head and in my heart that conservatives are the number one domestic enemy of the constitution whether they know it or not. Take a moment and look longingly at my Avatar. You cannot find a hotter image on the internet.

18. Thomas Jefferson
Scientist, philosopher, ideologically committed (small 'd') democrat, enlightenment thinker, defender of the state from the religious and vice-versa. Overall, quite simply the best man to ever hold the office; the closest thing the United States has ever had or ever will have to the Socratic notion of a "philosopher-king".

President Jefferson, when I think of my country, I think of you and weep.

25. The Sacred Hoop of the Four Directions of Turtle Island
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 09:34 PM by SpiralHawk
Was here for tens of thousands of years before the United States of America incorporated, and it will be here for many more thousands of years. That's because it is not based on human intellectual formulations, but upon the patterns and rhythms of the natural world of which we are all -- inextricably -- part.

The teachings of the Hoop are simple, and any person of any color, nation or religion may step into or out of the Hoop at any time of their own free will == honesty, caring, sharing, respect, and forgiveness. It's that simple. It's that long-lived.

44. Paul Wellstone was and still is an icon for liberals
In 1990 he ran for the US Senate against a powerful and entrenched Republican incumbent, Rudy Boschwitz. He was a college professor and an activist with no real experience in elecotral politics, other than a year working for the Governor of Minnesota. With no money and no name recognition, he defeated Boschwitz with nothing but a grassroots effort. When he got to Washington he was truly a champion for the issues that he campaigned on. He almost always fought for what was right, not for what was popular. Often, he would be the lone man in the Senate fighting for a cause that everyone else had already given up on. In October 2002, he was killed in a plane crash right before the midterm elections. The last major thing that he did before he died was to vote NO on the Iraq War Resolution, one of only two Senators up for re-election to do so, and the only one who was facing a serious re-election challenge.

If you really want to know more, read his book, The Conscience of a Liberal. Be warned, though, if you are a big fan of Bill Clinton, the book does tell some hard truths about his administration.

"The Conscience of a Liberal" should be required reading for those who feel that the true heart of the Democratic Party is based in uncompromising Liberalism instead of mamby-pamby weak-ass middle-of-the-road appeasement of the other side.

First, it's great art. It hit me in the gut, and second, I know how she feels. My Great-Gramma told me about seeing her from the boat, and what it meant to her family to come here. She is a symbol of all the hopes and dreams and struggle people go through to find freedom. Our 'fine experiment' has become twisted and shameful.

the candidate I support.

I have had others: Barbara Boxer to honor her pit-bull attacks and her courage. I have had the comic Strip character "Danae" from Non-Sequitur because I love her character -- a mouthy little girl who makes me really laugh (she reminds me of my god-daughter when she was a little girl).

But, I decided to go back to Wes for a while because I wanted to show my support for him at this time. When things get bad with BushCo, I always comfort myself by thinking of Wes's integrity, his courage, his dignity, and how much better off this country would be if he were President. Simple as that.

a quote,

"Strange, indeed, that you should not have suspected that
your universe and its contents were only dreams, visions, fiction!
Strange, because they are so frankly and hysterically insane--like all
dreams:"

80. I find Andrew Jackson to be one of the most fascinating Presidents
With the help of Van Buren, he was largely responsible for the creation of the modern political party system. He also is basically the founder of the Democratic party and the first President who who favored a Government controlled by the common man. Jefferson wanted a Government that favored the common man, but not one that was controlled by the common man.

I still can't hold him in very high regards because he killed so many Native Americans, but I still recognize that he was an important figure in making the US a more Democratic country.

73. I chose
Che Guevara because for me political involvement is all about the commitment to the downtrodden. The oppressed and those in need. Che was as Dr. he could have lived a fairly priveledged life. When treating the helpless and hopeless he became convinced that beyond healing their bodies a political healing was necessary. He was committed, he turned away from ease and privelege and started revolutions. Whether or not you agree with his politics you just have to admire his courage and commitment. NEVER stand with the powerful against the weak. Che as an icon says that for me.

75. I picked Dennis because he's the leader our country most needs.
I honestly believe he's the only one who can undo the damage of the Bush Administration.

the poor, the downtrodden, the beaten down, etc. Also, I love the Green Bay Packers!

78. Because all Democrats and progressives should be Wellstone
Well, not clones of him, but stand for things as clearly and unambiguously as he did.

81. They should at least all have the passion that Wellstone had
I recognize that not all Democrats are going to have the exact same views that Wellstone did, but all Democrats should fight as hard for what they believe in as Wellstone did. I guarantee you that if that were the case, we would not be the minority party right now.
