When FDR said the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, he meant that the only thing that really could bring down the great America was fear. America is safe in the world when people respect us. We are in danger when people fear us. Fear makes you a threat. We were a threat to the Nazi's and japan. We could beat the Depression when it was every man for himself because fear of poverty bread selfish behavior. Only ending the fear with help or with defense saves us.

No-I HATE them. I don't fear them. Your definition of hate CAN be right, though, such as in the dictionary:

So it's USUALLY derived from fear, but it can also be derived from anger or extreme dislike. So it IS the same thing as extreme dislike, but even more. And I believe the reason "they" hate us is because of anger or sense of injury due to our foreign policies like I originally stated.

I don't think anyone here is trying to justify terrorism. Terrorism, in all its forms, is hateful, brutal, cowardly and unjustifiable. Insofar as it is possible to stop it, it must be stopped.

But know that terrorists do not kill for just "pleasure and excitement." They have grievances, some legitimate and some not. But blowing up innocent people is not a legitimate way to air those grievances, or to make onself heard.

I'm uncomfortable with seeing this as hate or blind rage. It's a bit too close to the good/evil paradigm the right is pushing with respect to our current fight against terrorism. It also seems to speak to the philosophy that says that if we simply make the middle east like us, the terrorism will stop. I highly doubt that making nice to the Middle East would stop Osama bin Laden from being a terrorist. It might vary his targets somewhat, but maybe not. For him, Western cultural influence is every bit as much a threat as military or political influence - hence the Taliban's distaste for all forms of mass media that might "degrade" their glorious 12th century cultural project.

If you look at Osama's overriding goals, he's not really selling expulsion of the Americans from the middle east as the end-point of his struggle. It can be seen more as a means to his true end, which is to change the political, cultural, and economic landscape of the Muslim world to something resembling a cross between medieval Europe and the old Muslim world. In this context, he's certainly using hate as a tool to achieve his goals, but that hate is nothing more than a tool. It isn't the root cause of the problem. In my opinion, the root of the problem - the thing which enables Osama to foment hatred of the US and use it for his own means- is the schizophrenic and dysfunctional nature of Arab society brought on by the Oil boom and its associated political, social, and economic changes. Saudi Arabia strikes me as the most bipolar society in the world. Bipolarity is every bit as socially unhealthy as it is emotionally unhealthy.

I'm sure the reason why the OP used the phrase "They hate us for our..." because of the infamous Bush phrase "They hate us for our freedoms".

I don't think we really know what Osama's goals are, other then what the corporate controlled media tell us. I am sure we are not being told everything by those media. As far as i can see there is every indication that hate is being fostered on both sides, by those who stand to gain from it. In that scheme Osama is merely one of the tools.
Even without that i think it is to be expected that some people 'on the other side' do have plenty of reason to actually hate us (though not so much because of our freedoms), and have their actions guided by that hate. Whatever their precise feelings are, i think we can be sure they ar not happy about what our governments have done and still do to them.
I think most of the negative feelings towards the US and "the west" are warranted because of all the bad things that we do in the world. Otoh i think that most of them are as much a victim of what's going on, as most of us are.
